2012 Coronado Independence Day 15K Recap

2012 Coronado Independence Day 15K Recap

Well we had enough “fireworks” around here last night, that we skipped out on actually watching them tonight. Ha. It also had to do with the fact that today was one activity after the other and we just couldn’t hang anymore.

The Coronado Independence Day 15K  was this morning. I ran the same race last year with the boys (pushing the double stroller) and just read my blog post about it. Pretty funny. I’m not that good of a writer now and I was even worse back then. Awesome.

Anyway, here’s a quick recap for your entertainment.

After a few short hours of sleep I woke up with just 20 minutes to be race ready and out the door with Grandma D and Papap who were meeting at our house.

At least I gave myself time to take a few unflattering pictures and practice my finger aerobics.

I decided to carry over my “not the norm” prerace eats from the night before and went for a little microwave egg white scramble thing with a little SunButter (similar to scrambled oatmeal).

In the bowl- 1/4 cup oats, 1/4 cup egg whites, 1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk, 2 teaspoons chia. I microwaved it for about 3-4 minutes or so and topped it with 1/2 banana too, but forgot to take a picture.

We only left 20 or so minutes late. As usual the car rice down to the race was pretty darn exciting.

I drank my iced perfect summer mocha and ate my breakfast. Oh wait, here’s a picture of it with banana while it sat on my crotch on the way down.

I decided to ditch the stroller and run by my lonesome. I had just enough time to get my race bib, ask a stranger to take my picture

and find the port a potty line.

And yes, in case you’re wondering I was wearing a diaper. I didn’t need it, but you never know people. The diaper got ditched at the port a potty.

I wasn’t quite ready to break in my new shoes yet, so I ran in my racing Elixirs one last time.

I even made it to the starting line with 2 minutes to spare.

Just enough time to size up my competition

ask someone else to take my picture

and decide if I placed in the tope 3 that I would let myself order a spiralizer. I know, I really know how to make friends don’t I.

The race went well.

It was a flat and fast course and the weather was awesome.

I ran the whole thing with my iPhone in my Handful sports bra. Something has to fill that thing out.

I spent the first 3 or so miles trying to figure out if the person in front of me was a guy or a girl. I passed him about mile 4.

I didn’t feel like I was going to barf until mile 5. Score.

The best part of the course was running through the navy base on Coronado Island.

I had my vanilla bean GU at mile 6. I probably didn’t need it, but had it anyway.

The last three miles my main motivation was possibly getting to order a spiralizer and trying to figure out where I wanted to go to eat afterwards.  Ha ha.

My day dreaming almost did the trick.

(The above picture was the unofficial race time posted at the event.)

I got 1:04:06. 4th place in my division. So darn close.

It was a PR for me though and my pace was a 6:53 mile, so I’ll take it.

Yes. Yes I will.

If God wants to give me the love for running and the ability to do it….

then I will do my best to make Him proud.

I found the family pretty quickly after I finished (thanks to Mom’s flailing arms) and remembered I never picked up my shirt. They only had size large left. Nice. I showed them by taking not just one Clif Crunch Bar sample from the table, but 6. That’ll teach them.

Then Judah informed me he wanted some “freebies”.

I think I’ve taught him well. We made our way to see what kind of goodies we could hoard.

There really wasn’t much for us. Some Naked Juice samples

and some Power Bar Energy Bites.

We did run into our new friend Lizzie with Honest Tea though and she gave us some pretty cool stickers.

We stalled just enough for Mom to hear that Dr. Andy Baldwin had finished the race (we never could find him though) and to meet a blogging mama buddy Corrina who also ran the 15K.

and to find out that they were giving awards for the top 5 in each division.

Um, yeah, I was 4th, so that meant me.

Obviously everyone cared.

At least they humored me a bit and accompanied me to get my trophy.

Woo hoo!

We finally packed up the family.

Whoa- watch your had sir.

On our pretty lengthy walk back to the car (that might be an understatement), we happen to run into Esther who was on some kind of Mizuno scavenger hunt.

She had to take pictures with her shoes with other Mizuno wearing runners. I’m always willing to help out a fellow Mizuno lover.

We went to Centre City Café, the same place we went to after the Carlsbad Marathon and this same exact race last year.

The boys love the Mickey Mouse pancakes.

I love the egg white veggie omelet with jalapeños.

I won’t even start to tell you everything else we did today (parade, party, etc.) and all the food I consumed. I’ve been a bottomless pit friends, like serious bottomless pit, and have not been dairy free. Oops.

Tomorrow might be a rough one.

Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July!!!!!!!

You only have one more day to enter the Mizuno Mezamashii Run Project Giveaway. Don’t miss your chance to get some of these amazing shoes. Giveaway closes at 7/5 at 8:00 PM PST.

Best part of my Fourth of July was either the yoga class taken practicing along side my three closest girlfriends or the family dinner to close out the day. It was nice to disconnect.

Wow, Kristin- awesome race! I love this recap… totally get the part about finding freebies and the family that doesn’t care about collecting awards. 🙂 Although the only times I’ve ever placed were in local races of about 500, not exactly the same. You were flying– congrats!! You just keep getting faster!

I love reading your blog, Kristin. My son is 9 and the pictures and stories of your boys bring back so many wonderful memories of when he was younger. I have gained so much inspiration and motivation from you and love your honesty and realness as much as your amazing accomplishments. I haven’t found another blog I look forward to reading as much as yours. Thank you! It can’t be easy tapping strangers on the shoulder to take pictures all the time, but we appreciate it.

So if you are like me, you would then use the PR as the new terms of buying yourself the spiralizer. I always change the rules of my own challenges.

Loved reading your account of your race by the way. 🙂

    Linda says:

Congrats on the PR! That’s a great time! I ran a miserably hot 5K on the evening of July 3rd. Did not get a PR but still got 2nd place in my division. 🙂
So, I tried on the Elixirs the other day which were a half size to small but I could still try on . Really liked them but then they videoed me and they did not seem to help my slight pronation…..hmm, an and my right knee turns in funny. Anyway, my running store buddy told me if I’m comfortable in them they could become my racing shows and I could continue to run in my Brooks on a day to day basis. Curious on your thoughts….do I just have a racing shoe?

Congrats on your 2nd place!!!! 🙂 Woo hoo!!! I have a racing shoe (that I also use for faster treadmill runs) and I have my normal training shoes. 🙂 I definitely love having a pair for races and then a different than training and long runs. 🙂

WELL DONE!! You did amazing- all your hardwork is really showing- just look at how fantastic you are doing in all these races! Now go get that spiraliser. Life is too short to be spent thinking of all the wonderful times you COULD be having with a piece of kitchen equipment I say.

  23. 23

Way to go Mama! I’m still laughing about the pic with your guy’s hand down your shirt. Why do they do that?? 🙂 My son thinks it’s the funniest when I wear a padded bra. He likes to squish and poke at it. Boys!

  24. 24

You are on a roll – so proud of you and another win!! It looks like a great morning, except for the lack of sleep thing. 🙂

Anyways, great work and man – you are looking so thin! Thanks for sharing these fun events and your life with us – you are loved, friend!

Congrats on your PR!! You should be so proud!–And the diaper idea is such a good one! There have been so many times while running out on the trail that I have to pee sooo bad–and there’s no bathrooms available. A diaper would definitely come in handy!!

  35. 35

You go girl!! Congrats on your PR!!! Sounds like you had a wonderful 4th! We did too;however, I did a whole lot of eating and not enough moving! I may need you to kick my butt in gear!

    jessie says:

okay.. it’s official, you are A.W.E.S.O.M.E for so many reasons..

    1. You kicked butt at your race. I mean 6:53, uhh okayy Ms. Speedy!! Had to laugh @ the part when you were trying to determine the gender of that guy. I did the same thing during my first half marathon!
    2. I love that you ask strangers to take pictures of you before your about to run
    3. That you always keep a diaper with you.. i mean ya never know when it could be needed
    4. You have the cutest little boys around!! You should definitely enter them in to some sort of magazine. Ya never know, they could become famous and will help pay for some future races!!

  37. 37

Just a 6:53 pace for over 9 miles? Slacker!!! HAHAHA. You seriously rock my world. I can’t believe how incredibly fast you are – totally amazing. You can totally CRUSH a sub 3:20 marathon…trust me!!!!

And in a totally platonic way, I love your legs. I want mine to look like that after baby #2 is born. Just tell me what I need to do. =) =)

  38. 38
    Katie H. says:

Congrats on your run! You are an inspiration to me. I placed #5 in my age group in a 4th of July 10K. Although, it was a small run with only 11 people in my age group altogether. Still, I got a medal, so I was pleased!

  39. 39

You truly are in inspiration. Enough said.
