Survival Skills, Self Sabotage and a Giveaway


I think I have some pretty good survival skills. My body can be put through a lot and come out okay. I also really have a thing for sabotaging myself. I always tend to make things harder on myself than they have to be.

I barely survived the day yesterday. It was a doozy. The worst part about it was that it was mostly my own fault for some not so smart decisions. My choices led to me being extremely tired and having some tummy troubles.

Monday night not only did I stay up until 3 am trying to figure out travel plans for The San Francisco Marathon (which still haven’t been made- go me), but I also ate way too many carbs and sugar at about 11:30 pm. I started with my usual dessert of low calorie ice cream, but that turned into some extra animal crackers, a couple slices of apple cinnamon bread and some Love Grown Foods granola. Not the best decision, especially late at night.

I should’ve have gone to bed. I was just tired and all the weekend activities had caught up to me. I’m pretty sure my best friend Bob says you’re not supposed to have carbs at night. I think he talks about it in his book. Hey, that reminds me I haven’t started reading any of these good reads. Again, go me.

Darn overtime “office hours”. Darn me for not making sleep and taking care of myself a priority like I know it should be.


So yesterday while I was not at my best of course a bunch of fun stuff went down. Just a couple of my favorites:

I woke up to Kitty’s barf everywhere.

My brilliant idea to have the boys wear underwear for dinner ended up in 4 changes of underwear, 2 kitchen floor clean ups and an extra load of laundry at 9 pm to wash the high chair covers. Awesome.

My other brilliant idea to have the boys shower to save time ended up in one minor meltdown and one shower slip/head hitting incident.

Then at 9 pm Joaquin stood on our bed naked and peed all over it. He thought it was funny. It was not.

Then… I ran out of these.


Looks like we’ll be going to Costco today.


Okay, moving on. Sorry to dump that on you. I should be dumping my IDEA expo goodies and pictures instead which are much more fun, but those will have to come later.

Yesterday’s workout:

2 miles on the treadmill

45 minute BOSU class



I have a new favorite BIC Bands headband for working out that I found at the expo.


Isn’t the sparkle fun? More to come on the headbands later since there may be a little something in it for you. Hint hint.


Oh and I did an afternoon backyard boot camp class at my house. That was fun!



Some random eats from yesterday.


A monster breakfast STUFTwich.


I added a little Smart Balance, a Splenda packet and some cinnamon to one slice of bread on my standard sandwich and it was fabulous.


Lunch was a salad with turkey, a tomato, red onion, pepperoncinis, jalapeños,  some ACVM dressing, brewer’s yeast and who knows what else.


Goo came out as an afternoon snack too with some SunButter and blueberries and my afterNUUN tea drink, but no pictures.


I whipped up these potstickers from Costco for the boys for dinner.


In between peeing all over the place they were a big hit.


I was also back to roasted zucchini noodles for dinner with a cheese less sandwich.


Luckily I found these.


Ha ha.

I also created a new high protein microwave muffin 


with some new soy protein powder that I received from GNC.


Yeah, can’t wait to share that either.

And it actually looked a little like this when I was done with it.


I topped it with some healthy ice cream and frozen frosting.


Okay, I’ve got to get my act together for today. I promised the boys we’d make some green goblin muffins this morning before we head to the gym.

While I’m trying to stay away from dairy, when I did eat dairy these bars were eaten frequently. The yogurt peanut crunch is my favorite.


I really like how they have so much protein without too much added sugar and carbs.


Grandma D is a big fan of the vanilla shake drinks.


She takes them to work. I’ve also heard of people using them as coffee creamer. That’s pretty smart isn’t it?

They sell both the bars and drinks at Costco which is where I’ve purchased them before.

    I am in love with the bic bands too! They are the only headband that stay in my hair! And I think the not so smart decision I have made lately was to do my hard bike workout the night before a hard tempo run…ouch! I think I need to start focusing more on my diet and less on killing my body via workout!

    Let’s see my not so smart decision…..I mindlessly ate chips yesterday when we went out for lunch, they just came with the sandwich I ordered and I didn’t wan them and they weren’t good yet I sat there and ate some….fail.

    Also I opted for the oikos chocolate frozen yogurt at the grocery store today over my normal stony field after dark frozen yogurt because it had slightly more protein and slightly less sugar but it does bot taste near as good at the stoney field…..not worth it!!!

    Not so smart decision, heading to the movies last night with the fam bam and not eating before hand. I brought a bar to snack on, but made the ridiculously bad call to suggest popcorn. Then the even more ridiculously bad call to suggest a refill of the aforementioned popcorn. Total fail, still feeling like a BRICK is sitting in my belly and did not make my 7mi run this morning. 🙁
    At least the day’s not over, so after work it’ll be time to suck it up, buttercup.

        7 miles in 1:05 with hills & sprints! Ran it at on the mill in case my stomach decided to rebel, but that’s usually a good 10k run for me. 😉

    oh my gosh!! The yogurt peanut one is my fav one too!! & I would love to try the shakes also! & the coffee creamer idea is genious.. I used to use my isopure vanilla in my coffee but ive since run out of all my fav powders & im super broke lol so I cant indulge myself by replenshing my stock. Super excited about this giveaway!     My “not-so-smart” decision – not getting enough sleep. UGH!!! I am a total believer in getting enough sleep will equal good eating/working out decisions. Thankfully, I’ve kept my 1/2 marathon training on track, but eating is a totally different issue. For me being tired = eating anything and everything I want. YIKES – not good.

    I am with you on staying up to late.. that is also my not-so-smart decision. I was editing zumba videos of me teaching lastnight on iVideo.. I knew I needed to brake away from the Mac but once I started editing, I couldn’t stop!! haha. I think you just need a break, stuft mama. You deserve one. I hope today is a better day..and usually when I eat more than usual, it’s my body’s way of telling me to EAT MORE!! you do a lot of work outs, I am not surprised you needed more last night 😉 Also, i’d be devastated without red pepper flakes.. PHEW you found some!! 🙂

    Not so smart…going into the Nordstrom’s sale today and buying a bunch of clothing without trying it on b/c I had just come from the gym. Back for returns tomorrow!

    On a side note – my son turned 3 in April and potty training was a complete battle. He flat out refused to sit on the toilet. Everyone told me he wouldn’t walk down the aisle in pull ups but I wasn’t so sure. Last Wednesday he literally like spontaneously potty trained (just for pee at this point but I’ll take it!) and has been going on the potty ever since both with me and at his day camp. Incentives and bribery played a HUGE part – go to the dollar store, load up and tell them they get a present for every time they pee on the potty or the old M&M for every pee trick. My feeling is whatever works! Good luck!!

    Girl I so wish you lived nearby. I’d love to take a kickbutt class from you. My not so smart move happened about 30 mins ago. It’s cooler out (as in not 100+) but the humidity is 100%. Just tackled speed intervals. My lungs are not happy and I cannot stop sweating so co-workers might not be so happy 😉

    In my goal to get into shape and loose this post baby weight, I decided to wait until my husband got home from work to take a quick run instead of running in the early morning hours….BIG MISTAKE…in Sunny Eastern Montana it was 102 degrees outside and not a bit of shade to be found (yes i did this 2 days in a row…becuase the first day wasnt torture enough)…lesson learned

    I feel like I make not so smart decisions everyday. Ha! Usually it’s overdoing it and not taking that rest day. This week I was forced to as Monday was keratin treatment for my very curly hair. You can’t get it wet for 24 hours so that mandated a well needed day off! This morning I was up bright and early to workout with my trainer.

    I have been having trouble myself not taking the little u-turns on my path to weight loss and optimal fitness ever since I went from a running program to a triathlon program. Somehow when I up the effort I start to have trouble finding the right balance of calories and overeat all of the time. Office snacks are my weakness. People shouldn’t try to share so much! 🙂

    I ALWAYS make not so smart decisions. As do my kids. The other day my son and daughter BOTH peed on the floor in our basement. (we found out when we went downstairs to clean up). Um, they are 4 and 7 (he was 6 that day though – just turned 7). THen I ran out of cinnamon, chia seeds, and almond milk. MELT DOWN.

    Nightimes are like that though and just like you said, it usually means I should have just gone to bed. And I don’t. Need to get better about that sleep stuff.

    My not so smart decision was to take my “check engine light” warning to the automotive place close to home. That way I could walk home, less hassle. After spending $220 on 2 occasions. It still wasn’t fixed. Picked it up at 4 yesterday, at 6 the check engine light was back on. Took it to the dealer today. $100 later, I had a leaking vacuum hose. Now I need a ride to pick it up. Fingers crossed that the dealer fixed it and that I am no longer dumping money without a resolution. My lesson? Start with the dealer, hopefully end their on first trip!

    My not so smart move….. I have been having to spend almost all day every day for the last 10 days at a hospital with my elderly father who is not doing well. The not so smart part of that is that you think I would pack appropriate food with me seeing as how I am there so much, but very day I drive out of the drive way saying “crap….forgot the food AGAIN,,,”. The other totally not so smart thing is me and my 14 year old son trying to figure out how to email a bunch of Flat Kitty pics to you that we took on a recent trip.. We are so NOT techie people!!     My NOT SO SMART decision came yesterday. I’ve recently been out of running due to a torn sartorius. I don’t know what it means when they say “slowly work you way back”? So, I decided to go for a four mile run in 95 degree heat at 2pm. Seriously? What was I thinking? The lungs help up nicely, the leg hated me, and my sunburnt looks sweet.

    Every night, my husband and I vow to get to bed earlier. And every night, we end up going to bed late. Not smart. So then we spend all week tired and then we rest on the weekends, then start again. It’s not a good cycle. I want to lose weight before I try to get pregnant and it’s hard. (Only about 20ish pounds to lose and if I just stuck to my guns and ate healthy food and exercised regularly, it would be easy! I think more sleep would def. help me be more motivated because I wouldn’t be so tired all the time.) Anyway, I find your blog inspirational–thanks, Kristin!

    My problem lately has been consuming too many calories and not putting in enough gym time. My mind set is still on 6 meals a day (from competing in Figure back in March). I still can’t get into the mindset that my body does not need as much b/c my training is not in full force mode anymore! My mantra needs to be “Everything in moderation” and “Eat Clean” repeat, repeat, repeat!

    Yesterday, I made the silly mistake of picking up the birthday cake Oreos because I thought my hubby would like them.
    Turns out I liked them. Waaaay too much.
    Definitely the day to get back to clean eating!

    My not so smart decision lately came last night. I decided to try roasting cauliflower for the first time, really not smart to turn my oven on to 450 degrees when it’s 100+ degrees out where I’m at haha. Plus there’s only a few minutes difference between “roasted” and “burnt”… I found out exactly how long that is and my cauliflower mostly tasted like death and sadness. Oh well, now I know for next time I guess!
