The Recap- More Lessons From Bob

Yesterday’s workouts:

Taught spin

Taught 40 minute HIIT class, Back 2 Abs and step class

Ran 6 miles on treadmill

LONG day. I usually don’t run Mondays because I teach so much, but I started a new training plan from an actual coach yesterday and promised myself I would follow it. It was not easy to get on that darn treadmill at the end of my day. There was a lot of self talk involved. I kept repeating “no excuses” and “you can do this”.

I did it. Barely. Thank goodness for E! Entertainment. Ha.

2012-11-19 19.38.52

Once I got home didn’t do much else of anything after the boys were in bed.

I was back to the normal roasted broccoli slaw and roasted brussel sprouts with a cheese less sandwich

and some Dancing With the Stars.

2012-11-19 21.55.06

I also tried a little protein muffin experiment that didn’t turn out so well.

That’s just funny, right? It was quite tasty though so I’ll be repeating it soon and fill you in on the recipe.

Okay, so I shared the video of my little lesson on proper barbell lifting technique and facing fear from my best friend Bob yesterday. If you missed it, you can check it out here on my YouTube channel.

Barbell and Life Lessons From Bob

This whole visit meant more to me for some reason. I think it’s because I felt extremely fortunate that I got to make the trip. I’m always inconveniencing others so I can go up to LA for these and feel guilty about it. That’s why I told STUFT Daddy that I wasn’t going to go anymore, but I couldn’t turn down a one on one session along with a group workout. I also got a little more out of the whole visit than usual as I wrote about in yesterday’s post.

So…. here we go.

I scarfed down a cinnamon sugar breakfast STUFTwich in the car on the way up to LA.

2012-11-16 08.59.31

I actually got up to the studio on time for a change which was good because I hadn’t gotten a chance to apply any of my 10 year old make up. Not to brag or anything, but I think I’ve mastered the art of getting ready in five minutes with the visor mirror in the car.

2012-11-16 10.43.40

I have not mastered how to cover up that vein that keeps showing up in the middle of my forehead though. Ha.

When I got inside the studio Bob was taping a Bob’s Fit Food segment with former Biggest Loser contestant Olivia Ward.

2012-11-16 11.05.452012-11-16 10.59.51

They were cooking up some pretty tasty things. Pork with red onions and pear and some roasted fennel. I didn’t pay attention to the exact recipes because I was quickly distracted by all the cute Reebok gear.

2012-11-16 11.39.02

I’m not sure why it was there, but I pretty much wanted everything. All those darn Reebok CrossFit clothes are so cute.

I listened a little more closely when they got into the “Think Well, Live Well” tips. Bob talked about the fact that night time eating is the worst, worst, worst thing you can do. (Yes, he said the word “worst” three times.)

Um, guilty. I fall into that trap of mindless eating a lot when I’m trying to stay up late and write a blog post or get work done during my late night “office hours”. Not good. I really need to work on that (along with getting more sleep). Bob suggested drinking tea at night to avoid late night eating. In his book, The Skinny Rules, he even suggests going to bed a little hungry.

There was a little talk about cat nip tea before bed. Has anyone ever heard of that? It’s supposed to make you more drowsy or something. Might be worth looking into and it sure sounds delicious. Ha ha.

Even though I was distracted and didn’t totally catch the recipe they used, I still weaseled my way into getting my hands on the leftover fennel from the shoot to take home.

2012-11-16 11.37.28

Score.

(I still have that fennel in my fridge so if you have any tips with what to do with it, I’ll take them.)

It was soon after that when I decided to ditch my Spanx I had on under my shorts.

2012-11-16 10.54.39

Nothing to see here.

2012-11-16 10.54.31

I tried to be all incognito and shove them in my bag while all the other girls were waiting, but I ended up making a big announcement about it because, well, that’s just what I do.

2012-11-16 11.43.31

Hi ladies.

I contemplated trying some of the cute Reebok clothes on, but decided to play it cool.

I had my new Reebok Real Flex shoes and Pro Compression socks to try to impress.

2012-11-16 11.06.21

shoes- Reebok Real Fusion TR

socks- Pro Compression Marathon Socks

2012-11-16 13.05.51

I went all out and wore my new jacket and CrossFit shorts too.

 2012-11-16 11.46.25

And yes, I’ve had that jacket (Reebok Play Dry Jacket) for a week and a half and have already worn it 4 times. Ha ha.

We got a little head’s up on the workouts we were going to do when the producer came in to talk to us.

2012-11-16 11.49.30

Then we made our way to the workout studio to wait for our man.

2012-11-16 11.58.26

There we are. Team Bob for the day- Me, Bridget, Amanda and Renee

Bob was overjoyed to see us as usual. Ha.

2012-11-16 12.02.49

Our first workout was Tabata jumping lunges and air squats. 8 rounds of each. Doesn’t sound too bad, but man my butt was burning by the end.

2012-11-16 11.57.58

As soon as we finished I snagged the beautiful Olivia for a quick picture. She was so so nice and I loved getting to chat with her for a bit.

2012-11-16 12.29.59

After that I got a little break before it was time for my personal training session. I changed my footwear, socks and shirt. You know, different workout, different outfit.

2012-11-16 13.11.102012-11-16 13.12.36

I had to go with my new argyles and my custom Reebok nanos.

Then it was time for some serious one on one time with my trainer Bob (and Karl).

2012-11-16 12.27.25

I was doing a “Death By” CrossFit workout. Thrusters and burpees. I got a little talk through before cameras started rolling.

2012-11-16 13.29.46

He originally wanted me to do the thrusters with a weighted barbell because it would “look cool”. I’m not sure how much exactly it all weighed together. I think the barbell itself weighed 45 pounds (at least) and then I had big weights on the ends.

Well, it was heavy. I was scared, like really scared of it. You see all that in the video. It shows my fearful, timid side that I hide a lot.

My workout for the segment.

2012-11-16 13.30.10

I’d never heard the term “Death By” before. Basically it’s every minute on the minute with certain moves. You do one of each for the first minute, two of each for the second, three of each for the third, etc. until you can’t make the minute cut-off anymore. Good times.

We got the cameras rolling and Bob explained to the camera that I was nervous and coming from a fearful place. Can’t wait until everyone on BobHarper.com sees that. Ha.

2012-11-16 13.30.18

2012-11-16 13.29.072012-11-16 13.29.46

The workout started. It wasn’t too bad at the beginning. I was using 30 pound dumbbells.

2012-11-16 13.35.51

I should’ve kept my stinking Spanx on with that heavy lifting. Oh well.

2012-11-16 13.36.002012-11-16 13.36.032012-11-16 13.36.372012-11-16 13.36.532012-11-16 13.36.58

Um yeah, once we got to minute 5 or so it got tough. Really tough. I have no problem with burpees. I actually really like them, but those thrusters. Those are killers.

At minute 8 he took out the burpees and just had me do thrusters. The medicine ball was there for me to touch each time with my tush. I almost got to use a pink one to match my outfit, but Bob didn’t like that idea. Ha ha.

I got to 9. He said that was pretty impressive, but I’m not educated enough with the whole CrossFit thing to know how that compares to the norm.

I made it. A little shaky, but I did it.

2012-11-16 13.47.15

Hey, he didn’t mark my last one on there. Beavis.

This guy knows how to push people. He is the best.

2012-11-16 13.46.50

It’s crazy how different workouts are so much harder. I can run all day long, but these short intense workouts with heavy lifting are no joke. I really should try to incorporate them more often. One of these days…..

After the workouts I made my way home. Snacks in the car (in case you care) were Trader Joe’s roasted turkey, a Fuji apple and a Clif Chocolate Mint Builder’s bar.

2012-11-16 14.15.272012-11-16 14.48.30

They held me over until my emergency Starbuck’s stop. Yeah, this one where I dug through the trash because I thought I threw my phone away. Nice.

Okay. Time to get a move on. I have my first real running workout for my training plan that my new coach wrote for me to tackle and a BOSU class to teach. Can’t wait to tell you about my coach!

And, well, some kabocha squash to roast. Ha ha.

We’re going to tape a little fun Thanksgiving Day workout for you all too! Stay tuned! Let me know if there are any particular requests.

That picture of the mug made me laugh :)
It’s so fun to read about your ‘adventures with Bob’…such a cool opportunity!

  2. 2

I love these recaps! I’m glad you went to work with Bob again. And it has to be a total mental thing about the barbell… Because you are doing 30lb dumbbells for a total of 60lbs….. the barbell weighs 45 and the bumpers were 10 so that’d be 65… just a few off from the dumbbells! I actually think that dumbbell thrusters are harder because you have to use more balance/core. Death by workouts are crazy. Death by burpees. the worst!

You and your protein muffins and how they end up either outside the cup or on the outside of the cup. This is amazing to me! Love all the pink you were ROCKING! Looking amazing as always and STRONG! I need to send you one of my t-shirts. Make sure to give me address, so I can. THANKS! :)

One word. Bangs. You don’t want to see the mess I have going on up on my forehead.

I can’t beleive you lifted all that weight. I’d been fine with just the 45 lb bar. :-)

    Samantha says:

So thoughts: I am not a dietician, I have never had to dump a ton of weight or anything, and I eat at night. Not to refute what he is suggesting, and he is dealing with educating people with some probably significant either weight or eating problems but eating at night probably just plain works for you. You are not overweight and while you talk about eating a lot during the day it is not necessarily calorie heavy. My guess is what you are eating at night is actually calories you need. You would have to probably bring more heavy calories up during the day to survive axing them at night. :) (the dessert for breakfast approach…lol)

I hope you can talk more about your trainer/coach experience. Is this more towards a professional running goal?

    Have a great day!

i agree! kristen you are so fit, healthy, strong and BUSY with tons a workouts a day. If you don’t eat at night you will whittle away to nothing! please keep eating and not worrying :) BTW how awesome that you get to work out with Bob. What an incredible experience you have had.

I think he was talking more about mindless eating or overeating late at night. That’s how I interpreted it. I need to edit the post I think since it didn’t explain it that well.
And yes, can’t wait to share more about my coach, etc. :)

      • Samantha says:

Eh, don’t sweat it. But that makes more sense. I know I get conditioned to a food routine at night for part of unwinding. It is kind of like his go to bed hungry opinion. That can mean different things depending on your food demons.

Good! I can’t wait to hear about it. :)

    Marie says:

Love the Bob posts! :) You may have already addressed this Kristen, but how do we “normal folk” get access to these Bob workouts? do we have to sign up/pay for membership or something? I’d love to see the videos of all of these workouts. I do agree with you- I can run all day, but am seriously sweating after some of those shorter Cross-fit, Insanity-style workouts…which is why I’ve been trying to do more of them!
Oh one more thing- does Bob have any tips for how to do some of these workouts at home? (i.e. less equipment) Thanks!

      STUFT Mama says:

You have to be a member of his online club. They released one that I’m in to the public, but otherwise you have to join his club for $10 a month. I love the shorter, Cross Fit style workouts too. :) Such great cross training.
He suggests just using dumbbells for at home workouts. :)

    Stephanie says:

So I have to know if Bob is nice or not so much? I watched your video and he seemed a little mean. I felt really bad and thought that if I were you I would have probably been bawling ;) I also have to say how insanely jealous I am of your life. Meeting Bob…AWESOME! Working out with Bob…REALLY AWESOME! I also love that you get to teach so many classes. I am a personal trainer but sick of lazy people who don’t think working out should be hard. I have been considering getting certified to teach group classes, then if people are lazy maybe it won’t bug me as much cause I am working out too. :) Any way, I love your blog. Oh, I think Bobby (that’s what I like to call him ;) tricked you a little. I heard a producer guy or someone say that those big weights were only 10 lbs, maybe he was joking. Anyways, that would have made the total weight 65 lbs and you were lifting 60. Those big weights looked like 45′s so I can see why you were so scared. What I’m tryinig to say is that you are pretty freaking awesome because you bascially did exactly what Bobby wanted you to do! And doing that with 30 lbs DB’s is awesome, you are one tough mama!!

    Lisa says:

Sounds like a killer workout! Hm, I don’t necessarily agree with the eating at night thing. I do it. And I’m not overweight or anything. I think as long as you are getting adequate nutrients and aren’t obese it’s fine to not eat at night. I mean you are pretty tiny so it clearly is fine for you:) Thrusters kill me as well! Oh man, I always just avoid them because I find them much more brutal than burpees. Maybe that’s because I never lift super heavy weights. Oops. Yay kabocha! I just ate a whole one to myself. It was awesome.

      STUFT Mama says:

I’m with you Lisa. I think different things work for different people. I think he was talking more to those trying to lose weight who consume way too many calories late at night. Oh kabocha……

  10. 10
    Sara Grambusch says:

What a special Bob lesson! I think he’s mostly referring to people who are trying to lose weight about not eating at night. Otherwise, your body needs what it needs whenever it needs it. Especially someone who is nonstop like you, don’t go to bed hungry my friend, sounds like a bad idea. Just lookin’ out ;)
I can do thrusters, but one or two burpees and I am done for the day, lol.

    • 10.1
      STUFT Mama says:

I know. I need to edit the post. I think he was talking to those people trying to lose weight and referring specifically to overeating or mindless eating late at night. I didn’t do a good job of getting that point across. I can never go to bed hungry. Just not my style. Ha ha.

  11. 11

You really have me considering signing up for BobHarper.com. Lol. And again, jealous as always.

  12. 12
    Kathy says:

I know bob knows best but….I eat when I am hungry…that is definitely one thing I am learning…to eat when and what the body wants/craves. I am in more control and its working so win win. ;-)

  13. 13

I am so so guilty of the late night snacking (ahem right now). It’s so mindless, it’s terrible. It’s usually when I’m up late doing work or blogging or something. I think that I just need to get to bed earlier. haha. Ummm, if a workout is called “Death by,” that would be a sign for me to run the other way :-) In all seriousness, I love your recaps of your dates with your boyfriend.

  14. 14

I love reading about your experiences with Bob; that is so awesome! How is he one-on-one? Your protein muffin experiment made me laugh, because I’ve had that happen too!

  15. 15
    Crystal says:

You are so lucky to get to work out with Bob! And as any girl would, I appreciated the outfit change! Cheers…and feel better!

  16. 16

That looks like an awesome workout!! I must say I’m a wee little jealous of your PT time with Bob. lol ;)

  17. 17
    Shanon says:

I totally understand the “fear” thing. My mental block is with box jumps. I get so mad at myself because I let the fear get in the way… so I can totally relate. THank you for sharing the work outs and what you learned from Bob. I love trying what you do with him on my own!! Thrusters are killer!!! Nice job lady… motivating and inspiring as always :)

  18. 18

always love reading your experiences, so fun!! Ok well is fun the right word…hmm yes even though it looks tough as heck I think I’ll stick with fun :)
