Day 5 of Holiday Giveaways- Rise and Shine

Workouts:

Friday-

Was supposed to do a 16 mile run. Didn’t. Managed to get to the gym and get on the treadmill for 6 miles at night.

photo

Then I went to Costco. I thought I’d make it out of there within 30 minutes for less than $100 dollars. Boy was I wrong. Who the heck makes a quick trip to Costco on a Friday night? And who the heck are all those people hanging out there? I guess it’s the cool place to be.

Saturday:

Taught boot camp in the morning at the park.

Snuck out in the afternoon for a slow, not that fun run. My body’s been feeling really heavy the past week or so and I know it’s from lack of sleep. Ugh. I had to try out some new sneaks though.

photo

Yes, I got some new Mizuno Inspires just the other day. More on the shoes coming up in the next few days. They get a “favorite” post all of their own. Surprise, surprise.

Favorite part of the run was here around mile 5. I finally felt good and looked up and realized it was one heck of a beautiful day.

photo

Oh man, so Judah’s sick over here. We had big plans for the day yesterday, but Mommy duty called and all our plans changed. Sometimes it puts things into perspective a little though when that happens. My new promotion has to be number one, right?

We were up all hours of the night Friday so I was dragging yesterday. I always forget how stinking important sleep is. I’m not a friendly person when I don’t get it. I also make really bad choices to post unflattering pictures of myself and my tired face and messy hair.

photo

Lovely. Don’t mind the line across my forehead from my Halo hat I was sporting earlier at boot camp.

Oh, and there’s my guy. Even in his sickened state he still wanted to hitch a ride in the laundry basket.

I managed to whip up this quick breakfast in the morning after boot camp yesterday. It’s Mama’s Healthy Apple Microwave Muffin made with 1/2 cup egg whites instead of 1/4 for a little extra protein. I topped it with PB2, peanut butter and a Jazz apple.

photo

It was delicious.

We were supposed to go to Grandma and Papap’s for a little birthday party for Papap last night, but since Judah was sick, the party came to us.

IMG_6093

Totally normal to make Papap open up his presents in the tent, yes?

kitty holiday giveaway

I’ll make it quick today.

Actually, when I’m trying to make things quick and/or running out the door today’s giveaway comes in really handy.

11-2257258_Rise_WRAPPER_Breakfast_CashewAlmond

I found these bars at a few different race expos. We did some serious damage at their booth at one of them.

2012-08-17 14.51.05

The boys and I had about three samples each at the expo for America’s Finest Half Marathon this past August.

2012-08-17 14.51.512012-08-17 14.54.33

Ha ha. I’m totally not kidding. We each had at least three samples (maybe quite a few more, but who’s counting). It’s a wonder why they didn’t make us leave.

Since then these bars have been making their way into our on the go snack bags on a regular basis.

IMG_5995

They have three different varieties of bars:

breakfast,

IMG_5996

energy+

IMG_5997

and protein+.

IMG_5998

My two favorites are the crunchy carob chip protein+ bar and the crunchy cashew almond breakfast bar.

The protein bars are not dairy free, but the other two varieties are. All the bars are gluten free.

For you, for this “Rise and Shine” Sunday, one winner will receive a variety box of 12 Rise bars.

IMG_5994

Leave a comment here telling me what you do to “wake up” when you’re feeling super tired during the day (I could use some tricks) or what your on the go snack is when you’re pressed for time.

Woo hoo!

*Giveaway will be open until Monday night at 11:00pm. Open to US residents only.

There’s still time to enter the GNC Probiotics giveaway from Day 4 too since I’m a day behind.

And of course there’s still time to do GNC Santa’s Slim Legs Workout. He he.

Have a good Sunday! I’m crossing my fingers we not only “rise and shine” over here, but get some time to rest too.

I drink lowcarb monster about once a month when I need to get stuff done but so tired even coffee makes me extra tired or too jittery. I need help going to bed at good hour.

  2. 2

Since my kids are older, super tired = 10 minute power nap. I can say, I’m taking a quick ten and my body will just wake up after ten minutes. Or coffee. There’s always a good reason for coffee.
I raided the Rise Bar table at AFC also, and have just one more left! Definite go to for grab & go 😉

    Debbie E. says:

I’ll be checking others’ comments since coffee doesn’t wake me up either. Ideally a brisk walk outside does the trick, but if I’m stuck inside I’ll take the stairs a flight or two, and if no stairs, jump up and down!! Getting the blood pumping wakes me up every time (at least temporarily). Love Rise bars since they’re gluten free.

Go to snack is homemade trail mix: almonds, craisins, and chocolate chips

    Kathy says:

probably not the best …but I am sure there are worse things…..lately I have been making another pot of coffee. 2 cups in the morning to wake me up before working out….then around 3PM I have been having another cup or two….I figure its better than snacking/eating and it totally picks me up…

4 cups of coffee a day??? There are worse things in life right??? (Hopefully?!)

    Tracy says:

Hmmm….pre-pregnancy to wake up I drank some Diet Amp or strong iced tea. Now, its a nap and half the iced tea in the afternoon if I’m really dragging. I also try to do Tony Horton 10 minute yoga to snap myself out of it and get a little stretching in. I cut up fruit before I leave and bring it for on the go snacks or have an Odwalla or Luna bar. ALWAYS carry snacks for my son including Clif bars for kids, fruit gummies, cheez-its, yogurt covered raisins, etc.!

    Erin says:

i wake up at 4:30 most mornings to get my run n before the day starts, so I’ e ome to rely on 5 hour energy to wake me up. After my run and before work, I neeeeed my coffee. After that, I really don’t drink much caffeine for the rest of the day…..mainly water. So, these Rise bars look good. I’m obsessed with bars and trying new ones, the more natural, the better. I’d love to try these!

  9. 9
    Jillian says:

I usually have a huge mug of black tea to wake me up OR if it is really bad I’ll get an espresso from a cafe!

Sometimes my “wake up” trick is going for a run or trying some type of exercise!

    Shanon says:

I have a few “tricks”. If one does not work (and I have time) I will try another: 1. coffee, coffee and more coffee. 2. take a quick shower. 3. Do a quick 8-10 HIIT workout.

    Jennifer says:

Waking up on lack of sleep is really tough….tricks are truly just that, the best remedy is sleep! I usually stick to green tea iced or hot depending on season for a boost and getting blood flowing with a 5-10 min cardiovascular boost works too 🙂 fave quick snacks include bars of all types, so would love to try these! Greek yogurt , fruit and string cheese! Also love your quick protein packed “baked good” recipes!

I will have trader joes greens powder mixed with matcha tea and hop on the treadmill for a quick run.

I’ve never heard of these bars. I would like to try them!

  16. 16
    Brittany says:

Coffee is a good way to wake up; and an easy snack for me is an apple with a handful of walnuts or almonds. Its low maintenance, you don’t have to worry about needing any kitchen equipment to make it, and its not going to spoil if you have to take it for later.

  17. 17
    Tess says:

I’m realyy not a big yogi or anything but DEEP breathing really helps. You know the kind where you breath in and your stomach expands then you push it all out slowly, forcefully and totally. Love it!

Core an apple..stuff it with pb or almond butter or some other concoction and wrap in tin foil for on the go snack.

  21. 21
    Becky Przy says:

Oh those bars look sooo good! yum! I hope Judah feels better and the rest of you stay healthy!

I usually go for a bigger cup of coffee. Around 11 or 1, I drink 1/2 cup of coffee, pop a 20 minute Barney dvd in for the toddler and bring a pile of books for her to our bed and take a power nap. The coffee has kicked in after 20 minutes and I am sure not to oversleep since I know Addy will wake me up when the dvd is done. Sometimes working out helps, other times it drains the tiny amount of energy I do have.

Favorite quick snacks: apples, bananas, muffins (homemade, but I freeze them right away so I don’t eat the entire batch fresh out of the oven)….I really need to work on higher protien snacks;-)

I love apples as a go to snack – I find that their fiber keeps me pretty full and I love biting into a really juicy piece of fruit!

  25. 25

If I’m feeling sleepy, an apple and a glass of ice water always does the trick!

  26. 26

I do about 5 minutes of yoga/stretches. It is easy to neglect but it centers you and helps get your blood pumping (which makes you feel more awake!) I hope your little one is feeling better soon!

  27. 27
    Linda says:

If I don’t get enough sleep I usually have the most unproductive day. I have to get at least 8 hours. Working out helps for a short time but ultimately it catches up with me. Kind Bars have been my go to snacks when I’m out. If i”m home, it’s always hummus, veggies and gluten free crackers!

  28. 28
    Melissa Witte says:

  29. 29

I work shift work so I’m tired quite often. Coffee, coffee and more coffee + movement = keep my eyes open. I think those bars would go nicely with my coffee. 🙂

  30. 30
    Marcia Schultz says:

COFFEE! And a walk outside no matter how cold it is (I’m in Minnesota and its snowing right now!) or sometimes an apple, for some reason that is a good snack to wake me up. I’d love to try these new bars.

  31. 31

Most mornings I workout right after getting out of bed and that’s my ‘wake up’ ticket–the days that I save my morning for the evening though I definitely have a harder time really waking up for work!

  32. 32

I usually drink coffee, Spark (sugar free energy drink) or when I am beyond TIRED- I reach for some candy! 🙂 Thanks for the chance!

  33. 33

Even when I am tired I can function some how, but let me sit still for too long or laydown with reason (I.e. stretching, playing with the kids) and I can pass out quick. I do dabble into the energy drink realm. Lately it has been Monster’s Absolute Zero, but Rockstar sugar free and Nos sugar free also have 0 or next to zero calories.

  48. 48
    Lindsay says:

If i’m dragging during the day, I’ll go for some coffee or tea, but if my stomach is growling, I go for an apple or Nutri-grain bar!

  49. 49

Oh poor kiddo. Hope he’s starting to feel better. I’ve not tried the Rise bars yet but would love to. I find that getting up and moving around really helps me when I’m starting to hit that wall of fatigue. Hope you guys have a good Sunday.

When I’m super tired, I close my eyes for ten minutes and do some slow breathing, then follow it up with a small cup of coffee. If I have time, I also try to breathe in some fresh air. Hope your little guy is better soon!

  51. 51
    Jessica Simon says:

shot of espresso and a 5-15 minute nap/closed eye relaxation period. Its a trick I heard on Dr. Oz or read somewhere a long time ago and I swear- it really works. The caffeine doesn’t kick in right away (for me at least) and by the time it you trick your mind in to thinking its slept.

    Beth Petrassi says:

Clinically I am narcoleptic (not even kidding here – I was tested, but they said I have propensities toward excessive sleepiness when I am sleep deprived) soooo I always try to make sure I get enough sleep. BUT when I don’t and I know that I feel sleepiness coming on I drink coffee (lots of it) and walk my dogs (fresh air) or take a nap. I really like to take a nap – I do it almost every day 🙂 It was definitely more of a challenge when the kids were smaller and up at weird hours or sick and up for what seemed like days, but I do have a pretty awesome husband, so he usually took over when I was sleeping on duty 😉
Sorry you have a sick one in the house, that is never good.

  65. 65

It’s horrible but I gotta have my coffee! I also have a little regemine of antioxidants that I take. And sometimes a quick little run helps me too. That’s why I love doing my works outs in the morning. Totally boosts my energy for the day!

  66. 66

If possible, sometimes jumping in the shower helps revive me if I’m feeling slumped. Otherwise, 5 minutes of calm breathing and a glass of water helps too:) Thanks for the giveaways!!

  76. 76

i LOVE trying out different bars, and would love to try these out! my go-to in order to wake up is usually a warm cup of coffee or tea with a hearty breakfast!

  77. 77

To wake myself up, I usually brew two bags of green tea, do a few stretching routines and go for a walk outside. I might do jumping jacks some days too. Yep, and this is usually at work, in an office environment, so I get some stares. Oh well, wayyyyy better than just sitting…..

Thanks for the giveaway opportunities, these are all great products!!

    Joy says:

My on-the-go snack of choice is a Luna bar or a Clif bar.

When I’m super tired and feel like I’m not able to function normally, I try and make sure that I keep fueled with good food (no sugar for me at times like this) and lots of water because I feel like that makes a big difference in how I feel.

Thanks for the chance to win!

    Amanda says:

A shower usually wakes me up when I’m feeling sluggish in the afternoon hours. That or a quick ‘cat nap’ does the trick!

  81. 81
    Lisha says:

Whenever I am low on sleep, which happens all too often, my go to’s are a cup (or 10, but who’s really counting???) of coffee and some MOVEMENT!!! No matter how much I am dreading the gym/anythingotherthanlayingonthecouch I give myself the “20” rule. If I feel better after 20 min, I’ll continue or stop if its just not happening. Either way, it works out, at least I got in 20 min on a “lazy day” or, as always,, my blood gets pumping and endorphins start rushing around my crazy head and it turns out to be the best workout EVER!

Anyway, my solution is simply this: just move and some (light, depending on your tolerance level) coffee and you won’t realize how tired you are until you crash at night 🙂

  82. 82
    elizabeth says:

I’ve been making your “pizoatie’s”. Great sugar free way to use up my frozen bananas. I haven’t added pb or chia yet, but they turn out great, today I made muffins. Thank you!

Nothing wakes me up in the morning like a spin class! Energy for the rest of the day!

  86. 86
    Sherry says:

My wake me up drink of choice is a homemade SF caramel mocchiato. Made stuftmama style ( like ur caramel mocha but without the chocolate and maybe a little extra espresso). Another pick me up during the day — I drink after I’ve worked all day at the office and then have to teach a core challenge class after work is a vega one energizing smoothie – chocolate flavored with instant coffee, strawberries and Maca added to it. The quick snack is home made trail mix – kamut puffs, raisins, SF chocolate chips and peanuts. YUM and filling (my son loves
    them, too)

  87. 87
    Cass says:

I always shoot for PB&J on toast along with a banana for my go-to morning pick me up!

  92. 92
    Christy Diller says:

Usually exercise helps spark me, but when that isn’t really an option (or I’ve already done that…)I try Click, it is an expresso protein drink and is awesome…always does the trick!

  93. 93
    Danielle says:

I usually have some sort of caffeine if I’m tired and its before 3; any time after 3 I’ll be up all night from the caffeine. I usually go for a green tea or coffee, but when I’m super tired I’ll splurge on any energy drink. My favorite is xyience energy drink because its the lesser evil of all the energy drinks. My on-the-go snack choice is usually a hard boiled egg or a quest bar.

  94. 94
    Lynn says:

Sometimes a few sun salutations or a minute hanging out in downward dog will help peak my energy. My other weapon against dragging, though it has artificial sweeteners, are the the On-the-Go packets from Crystal Light that have caffeine in them. Lots of caffeine.

  95. 95
    Pam says:

I wish I knew a good trick on how to “wake-up”. I get afternoon energy crashes and usually just get a coffee. My go to snack when I’m pressed for time is almonds. I like the toasted coconut almonds and cinnamon almonds.

  99. 99
    Nicole L says:

Like most folks here coffee in the morning has been my go to pick me up. Then in the afternoon diet cola cravings kick in.. sooo not the best for you either… (ha) Food pick me up’s I do partake in Luna Bars, however I’d love to try something new into my current bar rotation.
    Get well soon Judah!!

To wake up? I check in with myself interiorly, and see what I really need. Sometimes, it’s a breath of fresh air, or some away-time, and I’ll step outside, or go to a room or space I can sit and meditate in for five or ten minutes. Sometimes, I’m hungry, and an apple always does the trick for a snack!

Sometimes, I’m emotionally starved, and I’m tired because I need a hug or a phone call to a friend. All or any of those wake me up, but I need to take a few moments each time to discern which one is in order. ^_^ (Occasionally? ’tis sleep. But I can’t nap. So I just make a mental note to get to bed in a timely fashion.)
