Workouts:
Friday- a slow 4.5 mile treadmill jog
Saturday- taught a morning boot camp in the rain at the park
Yeah, I begged my friend to take this picture of me after class while she was in her car ready to leave. My poor boot campers. Not only do we work out in the rain, but then I make them take pictures of me because I was excited about my Mizuno jacket and my new Halo Headband. I’m surprised I have people show up sometimes. Ha.
Check it out though. It has a velcro back and that sweat seal that seriously keeps sweat out of your eyes.
Pretty darn cool.
So, I’ve been getting a little advice lately. I thought I’d share it with you and well, give you a little advice of my own.
Do not give in to the following request for lunch from a toddler, “My tummy needs sugar.” Actually, I gave in, but his sugar was in the form of a pear.
Do not let the fact that your three year old has told you more than once that he does not need or like kabocha squash. He’ll come around one of these days. I mean how can he resist this?
Ha ha.
It’s not the best idea to head to a race expo in heavy traffic and the pouring rain an hour before it closes.
We got there with 20 minutes to spare. Luckily I had just enough time to pick up my number
and stop at my favorite booths.
I scouted out my favorite Nuun flavor,
chatted with the beautiful Sandy, the creator and owner of the awesome BIC Bands,
and just happen to scope out some cute new headbands I’m going to treat myself to if I get a PR tomorrow. He he.
Then I found my beloved Halo booth.
They graciously hooked us up with a couple of Halo visors since they are the only product of theirs I haven’t tried yet.
I really wanted the black one, but Judah was insisting on the blue one. So, we got both. Funny how that works.
We ended up closing the place down.
Definitely not the first time. We’ve closed down the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll expo before too.
We conveniently finished up just in time to stop for dinner on the way home.
It’s never too early to start carbing up.
(Whole wheat vegetarian pizza, no cheese, jalapeños, crushed red pepper and Cholula on the side. Yep, that’s how I order.)
Two more pieces of advice from me before we get to the more important advice from my coach.
Do take advantage of any kind of sale on kabocha squash, even if you only have a basket.
You can fit quite a few of those in a little basket.
Um, but do not go to Trader Joe’s tired, hungry and without a list. I did some serious damage in there just this morning. Oops.
I also just did some serious damage to this ultimate pear breakfast salad (made with a Fuji apple though instead of a pear) and an entire small loaf of that Trader Joe’s Whole Wheat Tuscan Pane bread.
Five servings in one small loaf. All me today.
So I emailed my coach the other night to see what kind of pace I should realistically be shooting for tomorrow. In addition to talking race pace, he told me to lay off teaching classes for the next few days (oops) and rest (I’ve been doing a good job of that though).
I confessed to him that I was nervous. I haven’t raced for awhile and I’m just not sure how my body will feel tomorrow. Coach Jason said it was okay to be nervous, but to be confident. Also that it’s important to not go out too fast for the first half which is what I end up doing a lot.
If I’m feeling up for it, I’m going to try to shoot for a 7:30 or so pace tomorrow. But, if I’m not feeling it and my body doesn’t want to do that tomorrow, I’m just going to race to enjoy it. It all just depends on how I feel in the morning.
Another piece of advice I remember reading in one of his books or learning at one of his seminars was that you should be oozing carbs at the beginning of a marathon. He told me to eat more carbs for a few days.
I think I got that one covered.
Bread, pizza, squash, etc.
Carbing it up over here. Carbing it up with a little compression actually.
Ha ha ha. That was yesterday. Roasted kabocha squash and a roasted apple with low calorie peanut butter frosting, GNC ice cream dream protein frosting, a little SunButter and some chia seeds.
Okay, well, time to get a few things done and figure out what to wear for the race. I really want to wear my new Elixir 8s, but it’s supposed to rain and I don’t want to ruin them. Is that silly?
There’s still time to enter the Pro Compression giveaway here (and get the awesome 40% off discount and free shipping deal).

What your top pick is- a hat, visor or headband?
(Mine changes and is different depending on the activity, the weather and my mood.)
Feel free to “like” our Halo friends on Facebook too for giving us a visor for this giveaway.
*Giveaway will be open until Monday night, 11 pm PST. Winner will be randomly chosen and announced Tuesday. Open to US Residents only.
See you after the marathon tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of your Saturday!

Mine changes pending weather. In the winter when I’m running inside, it’s headband but in the hot summer Chicago months it’s hat or visor!
I just found a long enough break in the rain to go for a very hilly 5 mile walk/run with my two girls in the BOB! Now I am enjoying black bean nachos (using quinoa as a base instead of chips). YUM! I always run with a visor and my ponytail a swingin’!
Good luck on your race tomorrow!
Nachos with quinoa as a base? You’ve got to tell me more about them. I want to try! 🙂
My favorite food is nachos in any shape or form! I cook my own pinto beans or black beans in the crock pot and then put them over toritilla chips and layer cheese, avocado, tomatoes, and salsa over them. Lately I have started using brown rice or quinoa instead of chips to save some of the fat and calories so I guess I am making more of a rice/quinoa bowl instead of real nachos? But hey, it is my lunch so I can call it whatever I want! Since I am vegetarian I find this is one meal that is super easy to make for myself that really satisfies me when I feel super hungry. My kids (age 3 and 6) love this too. Bonus!
Depends. Most days a head band, but in the HOT Alabama summers I usually wear a visor and lots of sunblock!
I’ve never worn a hat or visor before, I’m considering getting a visor though to keep the sun out of my eyes. I think a hat would make my head too hot.
I like the visor. I have headbands and hats. I could really use one of your cute visors because looks perfect.
I would choose a visor! Good luck on your race!
I just got a mizuno running top – love love love. Wishing you tons of luck on your race!
I have yet to try a Mizuno top Heather. I can’t wait to get one. 🙂
I’m a hat girl, but would love to try a visor! Good luck in the marathon tomorrow!
I would love to try a visor. I feel like my head gets too hot in hats and headbands if theyre tight enough not to slip on me give me a headache after a while (I think I have too big a head 🙁 So I usually end up wearing a hat if sunny.
Headband! I have an abnormally large head (but I swear I’m humble!) and hats never fit quite right. I haven’t tried a visor in years!
Never had tried a visor before. I love the idea of the Halo products being the sweater that I am.
I’d love a headband, but a visor would be nice too 🙂
I’m really not a had wearer but love headbands and visors! Headbands especially for running, visors for when I bike and play tennis in the summer 🙂
I am a visor or a headband (BIC Bands) kinda girl. I haven’t ever run in a hat…feels like it would be to much on my head and make me hot.
GOOD LUCK at your race tomorrow!
I love headbands AND visors! I can’t pick!
Hat!! I love pulling the visor down where I can feel invisible and fly through my race! And the hat protects me from sunburn in case my hair starts to split (<– blonde fair skinned girl here. lol). Though I love headbands when I'm just running a few short miles or on the treadmill! But anything that stops the massive sweat drip… I'm down! 😉
I like a visor in the summer, but I love a headband, too.
I’m like you, and it depends on the activity and my mood. I always wear a band to yoga. Otherwise, for heading to the gym or running outside, I wear a hat or visor–it’s usually dependent upon the temperature outside. 🙂
It’s always nice to change things up, right? 🙂
I like to wear both but if it’s sunny and not too hot, I like to wear a visor. I love that blue visor you got there! Other than that, I typically wear a headband. I don’t have bangs but my hair goes crazy when I run and I need to keep it off my face somehow.
Gosh, the boys are looking so grown! Since I first started following your blogs, they are losing that baby look 🙂
My baby is 14, he lost that baby look a LONG time ago! Ha!
As for head gear, it depends on the weather, the activity and the mood of my hair. Sometimes a head band keeps it under control, other times it needs the full lock down! Definitely love my head wear though! 🙂
14??? Oh my, I can’t imagine these guys ever being that age. Ha ha.
I’d go for the headband, but I’m sure I’d love all three!
I probably wear headbands most often but sometimes they slip off my head. Would love to try the visor though! Good Luck at the Sand Diego Rock n Roll race!!
It depends on what time of day it is and the weather.
I’m a visor girl and it just so happens that Im in the market for a new one!
I love headbands!!! Wear them constantly to workout or not to workout HAHA!! I like Bic Bands but I also just got Sparkly Soul headbands too & they are awesome too! YAY for headware LOL!! Good luck on the race! Oh & I totally agree about the shoes… when you really like them sometimes you don’t want them dirty even though you know eventually they will get dirty HAHA!! 😀
Headbands do not stay on my head!! I wish they would, so I don’t get sweat in my eyes. So, if I am outside I go with a hat. I think visors are super cute, but I am notorious for getting a sunburned scalp!!
Since I’m living in MI, I am a hat runner from October to spring, but I’ve never tried a visor before.
I had a Halo headband but one of my twins snatched it for track practice and I never got it back. I would like to try the visor, per my dermatologist, who says i need to wear one after having 4 surgeries for skin cancer
You should get that darn headband back. 🙂
I have become a headband girl! I came across Bani Bands at the Army Ten Miler Expo, and I LOVE THEM!! They are the only headbands that I have worn that stay on during Bikram Yoga. I have started using them while I run, and sometimes underneath a hat to keep the hair situated. I love to wear hats when I run too-I have a ton of them!
Visor to keep the skin protected 🙂
I always wear a headband–I need to try a hat or visor one of these days, but I worry about my head and /or forehead getting too hot and will start to itch.
Visor or headband- my hair is too big to fit in a hat 🙂
I usually like running with headbands but have never tried any sort of hat that I would love to win one and see what way I like running best:)!
I can’t do a full hat. I like visors although I’ve never worn one in a race. (I’d like to try it though – I wear glasses so sunglasses are out & I dislike precipitation on my face.) In everyday life I’m a headband wearer.
Visor for running. Headband for all other exercise. That’s how I roll!
That’s a good way to roll. 🙂
Bestest of luck to you in the marathon!
I would have to pick a hat…although all three totally rock!
I am a visor kind of gal. Keeps th sun off my face and the sweat out of my eyes!
I prefer visors. Even if it is not sunny! Good luck tomorrow!
I would love the blue Halo visor because the sun is always blinding me when I run! Looking for some fun run gear for my first 10k in Charleston!!
Good luck in your first 10K!!!! 🙂
I’ve always wanted to rock a visor but I’ve never tried it. I really want to get on the cool-kids’ bandwagon, though and try out these halo visors!
I love my BIC bands but need a visor since I don’t have one 🙂
My choice of headwear is visor. Living in CA it is almost always a must to keep the sun out of my eyes. I feel like a hat keeps my head to warm. I will wear a hat in the rain and headband if it isn’t sunny out. Good luck tomorrow! Can’t wait to hear the results!
Ill be thinking of you tomorrow, good luck my friend! The HALO visor is my fave (I have a white one I bought at the AFC Expo), it really works and looks cute too! Enjoy your race tomorrow, you’re one fast mama! 🙂
I want the visors in every color now. He he. Miss you!!!
I prefer headbands, but have been thinking about trying a visor, because I got a pretty nice sunburn on my face at the Disney Marathon a few weeks ago, despite the sunblock I put on
I have a couple Halo headbands I LOVE. I would love to try a visor…. Looks great!
oooh…those Halo visors look really nice! On my early morning winter runs, I like to layer an Under Armour balaclava and a Headsweats beanie, topped off with a visor! In the summer I run with a big wide brim hat on, (I hate sunblock and the sun in MT is harsh and I’m out in it a ton in my vegetable garden and running).
I’m still eating Spicy Kabocha squash soup everyday and I love it! I like mine savory, more than sweet, but great and heatlhy fuel either way!
Good luck at the Carlsbad marathon! Will you be wearing a diaper? Ha ha! I don’t run races, but I’m a little confused on the diaper? Is it if your bladder is full and you can’t make it to the potty with waiting for the start of the race?
Why isn’t there any crushed red pepper on that pizza??
Picture was before I added crushed red pepper and Cholula. Diaper thing was from a race awhile back. Stuck one in my pants in case I had to use the bathroom and the port a potty lines were too long. 🙂
i like to wear cute headbands while i workout…but i would love to try a Halo visor 😉
I usually just do a BIC band…I think I would like a visor better than a hat, but I really haven’t tried that out either…would be a good time to try one I think! thanks!
For outside, I’m all about the visor. Keeps the sun off my face but doesn’t make my head hot. For the gym, I like a headband to keep the sweat and hair out of my eyes.
I usually wear a headband similar to a BIC band, but my friend makes them. I also have a visor for those sunny summer days. But now during the cold Wisconsin winters I wear a fleece headband over my ears or a beanie–gotta stay warm!
Visor! Headbands don’t stay on me, and hats make my head too hot.
Just found your blog and I’m loving it!! My first half is this February in NH so I think I need to go with a warm hat, but I’m usually all about the cute headbands!
Good luck in your first half Paulina!
Hat! I like a brim to keep the sun out of my eyes. And hats are nice for days when your hair is not cooperating.
My hair has yet to have a cooperating day. Ha.
I love both colors, but i’d probably choose black since it goes with everything. I’ve never run in a visor before – only hats. I bet they’re a bit cooler since they don’t cover your whole head. And that’s perfect since I live in FL! Hmmm why didn’t I think of that before…? 🙂
I just started running, mostly indoors, so I haven’t tried anything yet, but I think I would like either a headband or visor.
In the summer or indoors I’m a headband kind of girl. In the winter you need a pretty good stocking cap around here. I’d love to try a visor when the weather warms up!
I wear them all depending on the weather, temp etc. I do wear visors a lot in the hot summers here and my go to one I wore so much it fell apart. These look awesome and I have not seen anyone wearing them around here.
Good luck girl, you will do awesome I know. Hope the weather works out and everything comes together. Enjoy it and believe in you.
Thanks so much Lorie! You should totally start a new Halo trend over there. 🙂 He he.
I’m a headband girl! I could consider a visor, but never a hat for me!
I always wear my Nike visor and have never tried anything else!
Good Luck!! Headbands have a way of slipping off my head so I generally go for the hat! Never owned a visor actually so maybe I should invest!
I’m more of a hat visor person. I have short hair so I feel kind of silly in a head band and it makes my hair stand up weird. I live in Arizona and would love to try one of these.
Bailey
i’ve only even worn headbands, but should probably give a hat or a visor a chance
I can’t stand wearing tight things on my head, so don’t know what would work best for me. I’ve done soft head bands, but haven’t tried anything else.
I usually stick with headbands. I love BIC bands! But I’d love to give the visor a try!
Typically I go for headband. Good luck on the race tomorrow, you are going to kill it! Plus all that squash won’t hurt in fueling you through the 26+ miles. 😉
I should get shirt that says “fueled by squash” or something. Ha ha.
I usually like the headband, however hats can be nice as well. For races I prefer the headband because they stay on a LOT better than a hat typically would.
I have never tried running with a visor or hat before, but I’m really looking forward to it come summertime when the sun (hopefully) comes out here in Germany!
Good luck with the race! I always wear a visor in the summer, and headbands when I am inside on the treadmill. Not that it matters, but when I had short hair, the visor looked the best on my head.
ENJOY the race!!!! I live in North Carolina where the weather is unpredictable. I like the changes and I like to change my accessories.. So I like having different styles to fit any weather and it is fun to swith things up.
I prefer visors over hats, definitely. Headbands for some reason don’t work on my head :\ . Good luck with the race, Kristen!
I usually go with a headband unless it is raining. Hope the race went well!
If it’s raining or very chilly I wear a hat. During the spring and summer months I switch between visors and headbands. Visors when it’s very sunny and headbands the rest of the time.
I guess I’m a headband person- but only because I’ve never tried wearing a hat or visor… I always figured it would feel weird while running. But it’d be great to not have the sun in my eyes! Good luck with the race!
Definitely a visor for me 🙂
I wear a headband when I run indoors, but I am in need of a visor to keep the sun out of my eyes when I run outside.
I love to wear a visor when playing tennis or golf. When I run in the summer, I usually just wear glasses and a headband. To wimpy to to run in the rain.
I’m normally a headband girl but I’d love to try something new!
if running outside, a baseball cap or a visor. Always. I am a stickler for sun protection. If I am on the dreadmill, I use a headband.
Glittery headbands. But visors in the rain or for races that start when the sun’s not up before the gun.
Cute headbands are my favorite, but I’d love to try a fancy visor 🙂
I also vary on which one according to the activity. I’ve never tried a headband like this so I would be curious. The light blue visor looks good though as well.
I would chose a head band I have short hair so visors tend to look silly on me 🙂
I’ve never worn a hat for a race so a headband is my first choice. Would be fun to try out though!
I am the same as you. It all depends on weather and if I’m having a bad hair day or not 🙂
The visor would be my choice…black!
It depends. A head band for inside an sometimes a hat for outside. I have a big head so finding a good gay is hard!
I prefer a visor and would love to win the Halo one. I’ve been eyeing them since coming to your blog. 🙂
I usually go with a headband because I once overheated while wearing a hat. I think a visor would be perfect!
I tend to flip between a hat and a headband. Would love to try out a visor though!
LOVING the blue visor! Tennis season is around the corner and it would be perfect! Although. . . the Halo headband would be awesome, too, for workouts . . .
Hope the race wasn’t too wet!
Headband for the gym and visor for outside
I like visors the best.. Give me less of a headache!
Oh I so want that visor. My husband has lots of visors and it would be nice to have one of my own. I would choose visor as first choice of wear as it keeps the sun out too during bikes and hikes in the summer. Second, choice of wear is headband. Not much into hats.
Thanks for the chance.
Have an amazing time at the marathon!!! I love those visors – I’ve been wanting one to run with and those look amazing 🙂
It all depends on the weather!
I have never worn a headband. Prefer visor or hat if raining always a hat. Thanks!
Normally I wear a headband but have been known to sport a visor or a hat on occasion when it’s really sunny (I don’t do sunglasses while I run). Fun giveaway, thanks! Hope your race went as you wanted it to go and that you got your PR!!!
I like to have the top of my head open to the air when I run. I tend to give off a great deal of heat via my head and face, so for me – visor in the warm, especially sunny, weather and headband – preferably covering my ears – when it gets cold.
I love my halo headband. It is the only thing that really works for me. Hope I win!
Aren’t they the best???
I love visors
My top pick is a visor since that’s what you’re giving away…hehe.
Headband …… or visor depending on the weather!
Congratulations on your race!!!
Visor for sure! I love my Halo headbands, but would love to try the visor.
I use halo headbands – every workout! love them!!
I love all three options. I usually choose based on my mood and my dark circles. Hope the race went well for you!!!
I am definitely a headband girl! I always wear one when I run…and basically all the time
On sunny summer days I have worn a hat before and a visor ( although not at the same time…I am not THAT weird..ha!) I find the visor works better to keep me cool and keep the sun out.
I need to try one of those sweat wicking headbands though because the sweat drips off my like an old faucet that needs a plumber. Big time!!
Hope you had a great run….
I was pretty hot with my hat on this weekend, so maybe I should try a visor?!
Depends on the weather & activity. I prefer hats & headbands most of the time, but it’s probably because I have many more hats & headbands than visors.
Liked Halo on Facebook.
I like to wear a headband in the winter and a visor in the summer. So pick me! 🙂
I’ve heard great things about “Halo.” I’d love to try their visor!! I love fedoras during the spring/summer, beanies during the fall/winter months. Hats are a fun accessory & keep the sun/sweat out of our eyes! 🙂
Hmmm…thats tough! I think I like the visor.
I would wear the headband daily and the hat for rainy and snowy weather.
I have short hair so the headband would look kind of silly! Would love to try the visor.
I always prefer to run in a headband- but at Ragnar every year the sun in the middle of the day is so brutal that a visor would be SO IDEAL! So I would love to get my hands on one of these – I bet they wick sweat like nobody’s business 🙂
Oops I entered my email address wrong on that first comment. Sorry! I corrected it here.
I use a headband but a visor would be awesome! I can’t wear sunglasses 🙂
In the colder winter months when I run, I wear a Brooks Balaclava then my hat. Otherwise I either wear a headband or a hat. It really just depends on what the conditions are & what activity I’m doing. I don’t have a visor but I’d love to try one!! 🙂 I can’t wait to hear all about your race!!!
Most of the time it is a visor as I hate wearing sunglasses when I run. I like headbands for my indoor workouts though.
I usually wear a winter hat in winter and a baseball hat in summer but that makes me hot. I’d love to try a visor.
Hi Kristen—hope the race went the way you wanted….I realized as I was checking my FB–I had three friends running the marathon! Lucky me!! I prefer the headband, but the visor would work quite well, I am sure!!
I have only worn a headband, Great time to try out how I would like a visor!!!!
Even though I know you’re supposed to run with eye protection, I really don’t like running with sunglasses and don’t like wearing a low enough ponytail to wear a hat so I would love to try out a running visor! And congratulations on your PR on the marathon this past weekend!
I usually only wear headbands, but have wanted to try a visor, just never got around to buying one.
For my night runs I wear a headband, but when I do my long runs in the morning I use a hat
I am sooooo intrigued by the Halo visor and how it holds sweat. I have yet to find something that does. I have looked at the hats before because of your recommendation, the visor looks awesome, and now that cool headband. Hmmmmmm!
Love visors! Perfect to keep the Florida sun out of my eyes while still keeping my head cool 🙂
I usually prefer headbands, but hats are crucial on rainy days!
I’ve never actually worn a hat or visor running but have always wanted to try one, especially in the rain. Usually it’s just a ponytail for me or ponytail and headband.
I prefer a visor….I find that my head gets too hot in a hat!
