Tips on Getting Motivated and Dang, My Car Smells So Good

Workout:

Taught a spin class

Ran 8 miles on the treadmill afterwards in an hour. Here’s how the run went down:

1 warm-up mile

1 mile at 6:44

1 minute rest

1 mile at 6:40

, 1 minute rest

1 mile at 6:40

1 minute rest

1 mile at 6:35

Then I jogged for a little while until I realized I could get 8 miles done if I sped up to a 7 minute mile pace for the last 2 miles, so did it.

Ugh.

Um, yeah, there are days when running is fun and there are days when it’s really hard to get motivated. Today was a little tougher than others. I had to play a few mind games with myself and I got pretty darn annoyed with Drew Carrey on The Price is Right.

IMG_9838

At least I was all matchy matchy with my Mizuno Musha 4 shoes.

I’m trying to mentally get back in the game of training. It’s taking a little bit of time, but it always does after a race. I’ don’t have a plan from my coach anymore either as we just worked together until the Carlsbad Marathon 2013. It’s easier to try to talk yourself out of it when you don’t have to report to anyone, but I almost think that’s better. Then you’re doing it for yourself only. To make yourself uncomfortable and work hard and be a better person. Right?

I did get a few things in the mail recently to help with some motivation though.

A brand spanking new pair of Elixir 8 shoes since my other pair got a little worked at the rainy marathon the other week.

IMG_7127

I also got a few cute tops.

IMG_7129IMG_7130IMG_7132

Hey, maybe a Mizuno tattoo would help me mentally get a little more motivated. How cool would this design be as a little tattoo?

IMG_7133

(Now I’ll really find out if STUFT Daddy reads this because he HATES tattoos. He he.)

I also finally renewed my subscription to Runner’s World.

IMG_7152

Not sure when I’m going to find time to read these, but hey, when I do I’m sure they’ll help.

Speaking of Runner’s World, they are debuting a new column, “Fuel School”. The column features nutritionist Pam Nisevich Bede (M.S., R.D.), an author, nine-time marathoner and long-time Runner’s World contributor and she’ll answer questions each week at fuelschool@runnersworld.com.

I like her already as she said that if she had to pick one thing pre run it would be coffee. He he. Research backs that up though, caffeine has been shown to boost performance.

I also got this little beauty from The Carlsbad Marathon.

IMG_7154

Kind of fun, right?

So, random, but now that I’m thinking about it, here’s a few tips to help get motivated if you’re happen to be having a little trouble also.

1. Splurge on a good pair of running or workout shoes. Of course my top pick is Mizuno and they have tons to choose from, but find what’s right for you.

2. Splurge on some cute workout clothes. If you dress the part, you’ll feel that much better and want to get moving.

3. Get some reading material to help motivate you. Find a magazine or book that relates to what your personal goals are and let it inspire you.

4. Remind yourself WHY. Maybe you just want to be in better shape. Maybe you want a PR. Maybe you want to run a race for the first time or learn how to swim. Whatever it is, tell yourself why you want it on a daily basis. Also tell yourself HOW MUCH you really want it.

5. Picture yourself doing it. Picture yourself once it’s done and you’ve achieved your goal or finished your workout. They say that imagery is key to top athletes. I like to imagine myself at Starbucks. Just kidding. Seriously though, imagery works. Before kids I used to imagine myself as that mom who runs races and has her kids at the finish line. Now, I am that mom. I think picturing yourself succeeding is key to all areas of life actually.

Hey, I like to dress the part every day.

Totally normal to wear running shoes and compression socks everywhere, right?

Smile

So……

We went to Costco today. I know, we pretty much live there, but we were out of green vegetables (mainly broccoli slaw) so it was an emergency stop.

IMG_9840

We were on the lookout for samples as usual and we saw this magic happening.

IMG_9841

Too bad they weren’t giving samples of those bad boys. I couldn’t part with the $13 for a container of chocolate covered strawberries, but man they looked good.

What I could do though was spend a little dough on these.

IMG_9843

Heck yeah we found Batman underwear at Costco. Score.

I made a deal that my Batman loving, potty resistant toddler can wear them once he keeps doing his thing in the big boy potty consistently. Let’s hope it works.

IMG_9842

Look at him acting all innocent in that hat and all.

Also today I was noticing that my mess of a car had been smelling very good. I couldn’t quite figure it out. It smelled so fresh and clean, a little like laundry detergent.

Well……..

IMG_9839

Isn’t that lovely?

I guess it’s going to smell pretty good for awhile in there.

Ha.

I have an AWESOME giveaway coming up tomorrow for Valentine’s Day tomorrow. Can’t wait!!!!!

So how many pair of running/workout shoes do you have now? Is your office going to be taken over by shoes? Love that you found batman underwear and at Costco of all places! And the detergent thing- I would totally do something like that.

Especially when it warmed up….I am drooling over those berries now! Good thing Costco is 3 hours away from here….guess I better just go make one of your microwave muffins to tide me over :)

    1) I have to have either the Elixirs or the Mizunos! Pink is my FAVORITE color.
    2) If they had those undies in a size for my 12 y.o. son he would TOTALLY want them! Secretly, of course.
    3) You could have spilt something WAY worse in your car than detergent and it could smell like crud forever!
    Have a super day!

We’ve had a major breakthrough on the potty thing!!! Thurs of last wk she wasn’t & like a magic switch was flipped…Friday….”I gotta go wee Mama”!! What??? We’ve only had 2 tiny accidents since! My older daughter wasn’t this challenging & everyone kept telling me, she’s just not ready yet! So don’t stress, I bet his “magic switch” will be flipped any day now! Maybe it helped that I told her she couldn’t take swimming lessons in the spring if she went potty in her pants! lol (I’m also knocking on wood right now so the whole thing doesn’t “go to pot” so to speak)!!!

I guess if something is going to spill in the car, laundry detergent is a pretty good thing. Coffee might be the only thing better!
I totally bribe myself with new music if I know I have to run on the treadmill. I rarely listen to music when I run so it definitely helps!
    Love those sneakers, too!!!!!

Shoot….I hate those kind of spills…but you are right …it will smell fresh for a while so that is a good thing!!

Great job on your run!! Thanks for the motivation tips..sometimes it’s really hard to make myself go to the gym after a long day at work. This is one reason I love your blog and love hearing about your workouts. You motivate me!

  12. 12

I knew you were fast, but gee whiz! You shock me every time. Great job on the run!

Good luck with the underwear thing. I hope that works out. (How could it not? It’s batman for crying out loud!) ;)

  13. 13

Holy crap, lady! Those are some killer repeats! And with only 1 min rest?!? Amazing!!

Hope you have a wonderful day with your adorable boys! Love you!

why are character underwear so motivating??? I just bought my 2 year old Lego Batman undies too…which of course made my 4 year old sad, so we had to go get him some Jake and the Neverland Pirates undies…I think I should quit buying them toys for special occasions and just focus on underwear….they even got compliments from my older kids too (7 &9) about how cool they were….Weird!! Nice job on a tough run by the way…I struggle and struggle to get speed on the TM…so much easier to me to do that outside….

After an Achilles injury and surgery in October I’m still in recovery. Much too slowly but being cautious. I have just started back to walking not very happy with it. I almost depressed. I have gained back too much of the weight I have lost. I have thought about going back to school to learn more about nutrition and fitness. Would love to be able to wear workout clothes everyday. Have them on now though on my way to PT. Thanks for the inspiration!

I really needed those motivational tips. I’ve been in a running slump the last couple of weeks and need to find a way to get myself out of it. I just signed up for my second marathon (YIKES!!!!) so I’m hoping that plus a couple new running outfits does the trick. My boys also have the same underwear. It’s cute how much that stuff means to them. Haha! I hope you have a potty training breakthrough! My second was so stubborn. We tried a couple of different times before he finally decided that it was his time to be potty trained. It was frustrating because I knew he knew what to do, but he just refused. I was a little worried that it took him a little while, but he’s never ever had an accident!

    Joanne says:

Love your motivational tips, as I’ve definitely needed a boost in the motivation department lately. I have my long run tomorrow and I’ve been trying to get past 10 miles on the treadmill for what feels like forever, so these are definitely some things I needed to hear. And ditto on the new shoes – mine are starting to come apart and are not the support level I need, which just makes treadmilling double digits even more of a mental challenge, and killer on the ol’ gams. Your enthusiasm over Mizuno has made me want a pair soooooo bad lol

I just want to tell you how much I adore you and your blog. I can honestly say you’re a true role model of mine in the lifestyle you lead and the attitude with which you lead it. You are wonder-woman, you do it all and I can only hope to reach that level of awesome someday! :) And your kabocha squash bowls are to die for, that alone deserves tons of praise lol

      STUFT Mama says:

Joanne- You are too kind. How did your long run go? And yes, it’s only my personal opinion, but Mizuno shoes are the BOMB!!! :) They’ll inspire you to stay on the treadmill. He he. Happy Monday!

      • Joanne says:

It went great!! I ended up sucking it up and taking it outside. It was freezing, could not feel my body, ran through some rolling trails in a park and next to traffic (hatteeee running next to traffic, nothing makes me think about my mortality more than that) and loved every second. Running outside trumps the treadmill every time, and it presents so many challenges that made me work so much harder. Made it 10.1, was too cold and already reached home to stick it out one more mile.

Thanks to you, I bought my first pair of Mizuno’s yesterday!!!! Almost didn’t happen and was so close to going with a pair of Asics when I asked the guy if he could show me a pair of Mizuno – the second I slipped them on it was like heaven, like the running Gods say “THIS SHOE is made for Joanne’s feet!!”. Going to test them out today, soooooo excited!!!!!
        Have a great one! :D
