Running Around, an Unimpressive Morning Smoothie and Yep, It’s the Squash


Hey friends.

today was National Running Day and we, well, we didn’t stop running around all day. I didn’t actually “run”, but we had one heck of a day that did not stop.

Workout was teaching the last half of my usual spin class and then teaching a new “cycle and turf” class at the new gym.


Yep. Only the last half because this happened.



Let’s back track.

For once we were headed out the door on time.

Since I’ve had to get creative and forego my normal blueberry breakfast STUFTwich on this whole little STUFT detox thing that’s going on, I made up a quick little smoothie for the road.

Be prepared to not be too impressed.


STUFT Detox “Juggling” Mocha Smoothie

1/2 cup egg whites, 1/2 frozen ripe banana, handful of spinach, 1 tablespoon instant espresso, 2 tablespoons dark cocoa powder, 1 cup unsweetened vanilla Silk Almond milk, a little coconut oil and about 1/2 cup crushed ice.

(Get it- “juggling” from the egg whites? Ha ha.)


I’m not going to lie, it was not the best smoothie around, but the 1/2 ripe banana did gave it just enough sweetness and I’m pretty proud of the fact that it had some protein without any artificial sweeteners in there.


About 5 minutes after that picture was taken we were at a stop light with tons (yes, I mean tons) of smoke coming from the car.

“Why is there so much smoke Mommy?”


I’ll leave out the details, but instead of making it teach my spin class on time we were hanging in a parking lot waiting for someone to rescue us.


Wait, doesn’t my head look weird in this picture? What the? Where is my shoulder and what is up with my neck? Hmmm…


A few people came to our rescue. (Thanks Olga for saving the day yet again by subbing the first part of my class).


After a long morning juggling things around, car switching, teaching part of my spin class and then a new class called “cycle and turf” at the new fancy gym, I finally got to do a little “running” in honor of National Running Day.

It was super short, but it got the job done and I got to watch a little TMZ.

The Mizuno Evo Cursoris and Pro Compression low black trainers were the footwear of the day.

A run on the elliptical still counts, doesn’t it?

And huge high fives to all of you who got out there today and ran.



Oh, and, um, yeah, the kabocha is definitely to blame for the whole bloating issue. I’m sure there are many other things that contribute (not artificial sweetener though because those were kicked to the curb), but kabocha does some serious damage.


I decided this afternoon though that the bloat was worth it and I did up one of my last kabochas the right way.

Roasted that bad boy up sweet roasted kabocha squash style WITHOUT the sweetener.


Then I topped it with some coconut oil and some Peanut Free NuttZo and took one for the team and ate the whole darn thing.

Bloat shmoat. I didn’t care. I still don’t because it was heavenly.

Oh, it looks good either way? I thought so too.


Afterwards I made sure to put on a black shirt (obviously) before heading out to run errands and do some Whole 30 shopping at Trader Joe’s. That was once heck of a pricey trip by the way, but I got some fun stuff.


Okay, off to bed.


Random, but I let clean laundry sit in the basket for way too long sometimes. I finally just got out all my clean Handful bra pads and put them away.



Also random, I’m debating attempting a little pool running tomorrow while the boys are taking swim lessons. I have no idea what to do or how to do it. Help. Do I wear a belt or do it without? Any tips?

    Kick butt job of keeping the artificial sweeteners out of things! It’s so hard to cut out sugar, I can only imagine how tough it is to do the rest! I’m sure the boys thought the smoke coming out of the car was pretty “cool”. 🙂

    Fancy gyms have cool names for their classes. I have no idea what a “cycle and turf” class would look like but would love to take it from a teacher like you! Sorry about the car but I’m sure the boys felt like they were in a comic book adventure!

    NEVER a dull moment with you girl!! Love it! (Oh yea, and as far as ME jumping on the WHOLE detox thing with you??? I have been enjoying your updates but sorry to say sugar has still been my friend this week….maybe next week though?!)

    I had to pool run a lot this past fall when I got injured! I know that some people wear belts, but I always chose not to because it added an extra challenge. It’s definitely not fun and extremely redundant; I would wear a headband and clip my ipod to it so that I would still listen to my music 🙂 Good luck!

    Watch some YouTube videos on proper form while pool running. Its definitley not the same as regular running and if you have bad form, it can probably do more harm then good. I used a belt and it wasn’t the most fun way to spend an hour, but it could be worse.

    Oh no! I’m sorry to hear about your car troubles. Kabocha squash is pure anazingness. It looks good from every direction and tastes even better 🙂

    Take a look at this link on water running. The key to avoiding boredom is intervals! I know some people say to wear a belt and keep your stride the same as on land, but I feel awkward with the belt–prefer to go belt fee and turn my legs over as much as necessary to stay afloat with a normal arm motion (which ends up being around 90 strides a minute during intervals). And every once in a while you can pull your arms out of the water completely for 20-30 seconds; this gives you a brutally honest picture of where your stride is weak or you favor one side over another.

    Kabocha definitely bloats me too, but sometimes it’s just worth it. Try cinnamon as somewhat of a substitute for sweetener.

    I do an egg white smoothie with frozen banana, strawberries and sme juice like 100% orange juice (probably not paleo). I ran yesterday about a mile or so to Starbucks and back to my family in line for It’s a Small World at Disneyland. Can’t say I was too sad to barely miss e ride and super happy to have some caffeine! Places like Disneyland should have caffeine stations everywhere so we can keep up with e kids!

    That made my morning. SO been there.

    I have limited water running experience, but opted not to use a belt. For me, it is a very different stride than on land so just make sure it is in line with whatever they want you doing right now (or not doing).

    Sorry about the car, hope you got it all fixed and didn’t break the bank!

    I don’t put egg whites in my smoothies usually, I know i should but I figure protein powder is enough.

    random- read an article on aqua spin class in a fitness magazine while on the elliptical at the gym today! made me think of you & your new classes & workouts. they actually put the bikes in the water- how cool (literally!) would that be? I am always interested in new classes & such. cycle & turf makes me think of surf & turf which is fish & yum, now hunger hits….

    WoW! I commend you for this detox–not sure when I’ll tackle the Whole9 plan. Could be months as I’m assuming I’ll be ravenous once I start breastfeeding and that wouldn’t be the best time to test myself! Hope your car is all fixed up 🙁

    I use powdered egg whites in my smoothies – never tried just egg white but I am sure it is fine too. Kabocha bloats? OH NO! I have not had that trouble, thank goodness!

    I am still with you on the detox… day 9 of Whole 30 for me today.

    I have never put egg whites into a smoothie and have never considered it…LOL! PS: I thought I had a iron stomach, but the all the jalapeño I ate yesterday….caught up with me and my stomach was a hot mess last night and this morning. Learned my lesson…Grrr….I thought you were giving up squash for a little bit? 😉

    Two posts in one day? You over-achiever you!!! “Back in the day” like, the 80’s when Rocky came out, everyone was drinking raw eggs and putting them into their drinks/shakes. I’m not positive, but I’m thinking the eggs add alot of foam or froth? I prefer frying/eating eggs vs. drinking them. You?

    I have definitely put egg whites in a smoothie, but I don’t know if it’s such a good idea. I certainly wouldn’t give it to children or pregnant people.
