Spring Spinning Songs, Shoes, Rocking and Racing

Spring Spinning Songs, Shoes, Rocking and Racing

Happy Spring! Yes, today is the first official day of spring right?

That just makes me feel like smiling. You too?

Got on the treadmill early in the morning again. Woot. Two days in a row. I’m on a roll. Ha.

Eight easy miles at about a 8:20 pace. Got the stare down the last mile from this guy.

2014-03-20 06.50.00

Then he insisted that I foam roll a bit.

2014-03-20 07.03.49

I wasn’t going to argue with that face.

I taught spin yesterday. I teach it twice a week. Love it. I think it’s great cross training for runners and I love how you can get some high intensity interval work in and get a pretty awesome sweat session without the impact.

2014-03-17 12.49.09

If you’re not sweating like crazy in spin (or getting breathless at some point), you’re not working hard enough. Just my opinion though. I’m always telling my classes it’s okay to have to breathe hard and to get uncomfortable.

My notes yesterday looked a little like this.

2014-03-17 11.57.08

So classy. Yes, I ‘m usually planning my sets in the car. Although my notes are messy, I do really like the new songs I used so thought I’d share.

Oh heck yes, I finally used that song.

Everything is Awesome (sprints)

Counting Stars- One Republic (great hill climbing song- add gear and pic up pace with music)

Turn Up the Music- Chris Brown (sprint intervals)

These are also on my running playlist.

I might have to find a new color for spring as my last purple sweet potato went down like this.

Yep, when it’s your last one you do it up right with all the goodies. Coconut butter, cinnamon, NuttZo, peanut flour and unsweetened dark chocolate sauce.

Oh and if you’re carbing up for, well, life I guess, sometimes you need a cinnamon roasted plantain to go with.

Ha ha.

Maybe my new color will be a pretty greenish one like this.

Coolest color ever, right? I just got these shoes from Mizuno and they are just perfect for spring. They remind me of Easter eggs for some reason.

Love love love the Wave Sayonara shoes for faster treadmill runs and for races. Can’t wait to break these in and heck, maybe they’ll be my Boston Marathon shoes since the race is the day after Easter.

Speaking of races, here’s a couple things you should know.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series is having a really cool Las Vegas Kickoff Night event.

What: Las Vegas Kickoff Night 5K Virtual and/or Fun Run

o   Reserve your spot before April 2 for an in-market fun run or the virtual run.

o   If doing an in-market 5k fun run sign in when you get there on April 2. This will confirm your participation so you can receive you digital medal and t-shirt.

The actual registration for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Strip at Night opens April 2nd. I’ve never run it, but I’ve always wanted to. I’m hoping to get there this year. It sounds like a BLAST.

Also, there are only a few more days to register for the Carlsbad 5000.

I’m super excited about doing the all day 20K and the boys are excited about their Junior Carlsbad race the day before. Who wants to come play with us?

Get $5 off (registration is $35 with discount) with code MAMARUNSCBAD.

    Amanda says:

Love spin classes! This week I have been having solo spin classes at home with my road bike on the trainer… Not near as fun when you can’t “compete” with your class mates though! A good playlist is definitely key for a good spin experience; there are a few teachers I avoid due to their taste in music!!

  20. 20
    Lottie says:

I love to spin I actually find it harder than running because you have to work twice as hard to get your heart rate up since you are sitting- I spin on my cross training days or after an easy run! I can’t wait for all the spring races coming up this winter in NYC was brutal so these spring races will feel like a celebration of all my hard work 🙂

  21. 21
    Lesley says:

I’ve never gone to spin class but ride by bike on the trainer inside for almost half the year. I would be interested to attend a spin class to see if anything I do at one is similar. Really love the spring Easter color of your shoes. I need to try Mizuno’s sometime.

  22. 22

Wish I could take one of your spin classes! I’ve been trying to incorporate cross training while I build my running back up again!

  23. 23

Yes to that Chris Brown song! It will be on my playlist soon.
The color of your Mizuno is beautiful, I really like aqua for shoes. I have the Wave Rider 16 in aqua and haven’t gotten over the color yet.

    lorie says:

I teach spin as well and agree great crosstraining. Sweating is part of it …no sweat you are not working. So does every instructor have the one guy or lady who never adds gears and looks like they are going to have a stationary bike accident haha! I am always saying we are slowing down climbing a hill and they are bouncing because they don’t add any resistance. Yikes.

  25. 25
    Amie says:

I love spinning! It’s such an efficient way to get in a great workout.

  26. 26
    kim says:

In my kickboxing class, I am always embarrassed to see the puddle of sweat around my bag. It gets so when we move on to abs, I have to relocate!! I know it’s healthy, but really?! haha I would LOVE to win the tee shirt and bag! I run and I’m a mom, so…… hahaha I am always so jealous to read your mileage and time…….I feel so slow with my 10 minute miles! At least I put in about 16 miles a week…… Love your posts!

  27. 27
    Smitha says:

I took a spin and kick box combo once at a YMCA in MN and it blew my mind! Awesome!

  28. 28
    Heather says:

I love run like a mother! I have the first book and have met the authors at a few races I have done
    LOVE, LOVE the shirt!
I am also becoming addicted to spin!

I am so looking forward to not having to deal with snow and sub zero temps this spring! I am so excited to actually see grass growing this year that is is ridiculous. I don’t ever remember a winter like the one we just had.

I have taken a spinning class at the gym and used to have a spinner when I lived in Colorado. Now I have a standard exercise bike I use when my knee is fine. A Vegas race sounds so exciting and I really appreciate the downloadable training plans.

  34. 34
    Jen Shaw says:

I have wanted to try spinng, but am a little intimidated. I will eventually jump on the wagon…

  35. 35
    Steel Springs says:

I love spin classes, but I haven’t taken one since I was pregnant. I’ll have to get to one soon. There are some fun races coming up. Enjoy!

No spin for me. I do ride outside tho–pretty much stick to running, p90x, and yoga. Never been to Vegas. My husband wants to take me–maybe I can plan around RnR! Looking forward to spring bc it warms back up the pool!

Just sharing these awesome playlist when I do interval training:

Let me think about it – Ida corr feat. Fedde le Grande (this song makes me pumped up while warming up; or when I do brisk walking)
Sexy Chick – Akon feat. David Guetta (It’s the beat that makes me upbeat; I usually play this when I’m running my first few miles; quite a motivation too since I consider myself one (LOL))
We came to smash – Dev; It’s sprinting time!
when I do cooldown I usually get either of this two on play:
In the Middle – Kazaky (sexy!) or Live it Up – JLo feat. Pitbull. HAHAHA.. Crazy isn’t it?
By the way I really love your shoes! Mine’s got a little problem with the sole. I think its time to invest for a new one.
