Butterflies, Ants on a Log, Another Move of the Week and Some Races

Good morning! Happy Monday!

First things first.

The winner of the Tommie Copper Giveaway is #176 Amanda (randomly chosen by random.org).

Congrats! Email me your mailing address and what item (capris or tank) and size and I’ll send it along.

This morning was unusual.

Actually last night was unusual because as I was going to bed (at 9:00 pm instead of doing taxes), I was already excited about getting on the treadmill in the morning. Not sure why. Probably because I missed out on all the fun at the Transamerica Rock ‘n’ Roll San Francisco Half Marathon. I will not be missing out on that again. It also may have had something to do with taking yesterday off as a complete rest day. Rest days are so darn important.

I was ready the second time my alarm went off. Was on the treadmill by 5:20 am. I thought I was cool and had a little plan to watch a couple New Girl episodes and maintain a different pace per episode. I went with it and it was pretty fun.

2014-04-07 07.09.27

Ran at 8:00 min pace for the first episode, 7:30 for the second, 7:00 for the third (and until I got to mile 10), and then back to 7:30 pace to finish the last episode.

2014-04-07 07.06.47

I finished just in time to suck down a little Vega Recovery Accelerator and say hello to Pat.

2014-04-07 07.12.31

Seriously, being done with a run before 7:00 am is fabulous. I need to remember this when my alarm goes off. It’s so darn worth it.

And of course, breakfast after is so darn worth it too.

2014-04-07 09.07.06

Egg white scramble with homemade pork breakfast sausage and spinach and some peanut free NuttZo, cinnamon and buckwheat honey sandwiches. Yes, not one, but two.

Yesterday, my guys were pretty excited I was home instead of racing in San Francisco.

At 7:00 am they were requesting to go to the Safari Park to check out the the Butterfly Jungle exhibit.

we used my handy dandy spouse pass and went to the park to see some butterflies.

Look who took a couple minutes of his work day to come and meet up with us.

2014-04-06 08.53.46

We checked out a couple other things while we were there.

2014-04-06 08.58.012014-04-06 08.56.582014-04-06 09.10.40

Yeah, that’s a lemur and they were really cool, but impossible to get a picture of. Enjoy the backside.

2014-04-06 09.17.05

There’s a baby gorilla at the park too. You can barely see it, but the mom is holding it in this picture.

2014-04-06 09.23.11

Someone introduced the boys to the foot massagers. I’m guess it was Grandma and Papap, but we were not getting out of there without a little massage.

After our little trip to the park, we decided to keep with the theme and make a fun snack at home.

You know, the whole ants on a log thing. I don’t know why I had never done it for the boys before. We didn’t have any raisins for ants, so fruit snacks did the trick.

Only one of the boys liked the snack, but I’ll keep trying.

I took my variation a bit seriously and added an apple, quite a bit of extra almond butter, some molasses, cinnamon and subbed in strawberries for the ants.

Some of you were asking about the green outfit I had on in the April Abs Challenge video.

I was sent the outfit from Puma as part of the Fitfluential #FFAprilAbs Challenge.

This gym tank top with a really cute back.

And these capri pants.

In full disclosure I would not recommend wearing the pants for squats, etc. if people will be standing right behind you if you know what I mean. The pants are very comfortable, but a bit thin for deep squats.

So, it reminded me that I had made another video the other week while wearing that outfit. And heck, I’ve been into the videos lately, so thought I’s pass it along.

We could all use a new move of the week on a Monday to try right?

Here’s a fun one.

Plank jacks with a push up. They’re tough, but fun at the same time. As usual, I had a little help with the video and he even helps demonstrate. Not the greatest video we’ve made, but oh well. I even left the part at the end when the camera falls to the ground on there for you all.

You know what else Mondays are good for besides moves of the week?

Signing up for races.

The Safari Park Half Marathon is a really fun, local low key half marathon and 10K. And you finish the run inside the park.

I’m getting pumped about Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon and 1/2. (Code MAMAROCKS gets you $10 off the full or the 1/2.)

I also just noticed there’s a Rock ‘n’ Roll Portland 1/2 Marathon in May. How fun would that be? Has anyone run that one?

Oh, and I just talked Mom into going with me to the ZOOMA Napa Valley Half Marathon and 10K. I hope she’s as excited as I am. (Code STUFT gets 10% off.)

Okay, I’m off.

Have a marvelous Monday!

What are your favorite animals to see at the zoo?

Any fun “ants on a log” snack variations?

Did you try our move of the week?

Are you signing up for any fun races coming up?

WOW…. Up and running at 5:20! I am IMPRESSED!! I always plan to try and get up early and run before my boys get up but it never seems to work 🙁 either the boys are up during the night so I don’t sleep well and I’m too tired or I actually wake up early and it just so happens to be the morning one of the boys wakes up before the sun !!! Oh well, maybe one day!!

Recently I had leftover quinoa and randomly mixed it with peanut butter and put it on top of carrots (roasted I think!) and some raisins on top. It was terrific with an extra boost of protein and the rest of the good stuff found in quinoa. I think I posted about it too but can’t recall exactly when I did it lol.

I wish I had half your motivation to get up early and get moving! Love seeing your little helper in the video, so cute. I am so not a runner but I keep signing up for 5ks, did my first one for the year on Saturday. One of these days I will be able to run one without having to walk…one day!!!

I need to adopt the whole running early in the morning thing. I always wake up.. and end up doing a million different things other than run!

My favorite zoo animals are the giraffes. Our local zoo lets you feed them at the exhibit, which is tons of fun.

    My favorite animals are gorillas!
When I was little, my mom would sometimes put raisins or chocolate chips in my peanut butter sandwiches for a little peanut butter and ant sandwich. 😉 It was always a surprise when she would do it too, so that was always fun.
I did try the move! It was fun and I definitely felt it.
Not signing up for any races now, but I do have a half marathon in about 5 weeks! It’s my first one and my only goal is to RUN the whole thing. Not sure if it’s going to happen, but I haven’t had to walk in any of my training runs so far, so we’ll see. 🙂

So jealous you are going to that Zooma napa valley race! I would love to do that one, but I don’t have anyone to go with. Maybe next year.

And I would kill for your arms! 🙂

Favorite animal to see at the zoo- penguins. Always the penguins. Although I went to the SD zoo once and was looking forward to seeing the cheetah that walks around with the dog. We missed it… 🙁

  12. 12

I’m also running Zooma Napa. It’s a girls trip and I cannot wait! Before then I have my spring goal race: Pittsburgh Half Marathon. It was my first race 5 years ago (yes I skipped 5ks and 10ks and just went right for a half) and I decided I needed to go back and run it again.

  13. 13

I love the color of those clothes! Although if the fabric is too thin that’s a problem for sweat marks too. Still, I’d buy them. 🙂

I agree – nothing like having 10+ miles done before 7:00 – it’s what gets me up early every day!!!
Love the move of the week- I’m a huge fan of push-ups of any variety!!

Awww hehe, your son is soo cute following your moves! 😀 And anything with planks is so effective for getting in shape.

At the MN Zoo the snow monkeys are pretty funny to watch. Jumping every where, picking bugs off each other, and simply giving every one the “red butt” because it never fails when we approach their den the butts go in the air ha!

I totally forgot I have an entry for the Safari Park race! I think I’ll sign up for the 10k then I might finish in time to see you kill that half. Lovely.
