A Treadmill Workout and a Few Thursday Tips


Hello friends.

I’m so thankful to be writing this from the comfort of my own home today. It was a bit of a scary situation last night around the San Diego area with 9 fires burning pretty much all around us.

It was nice to wake up to clear skies this morning. It was a relief, but you almost feel guilty because while you’re safe, so many others aren’t.

We’re definitely praying for all those out there today who have been fighting the fires all night and for those families that have been evacuated.

A lot of schools and businesses are closed today. I don’t have classes to teach tonight and the boys don’t have school. So we’re home and it’s supposed to be over 100 here. I think we’ll stay inside and try out the homeschooling thing today.



I ran ten miles on the treadmill this morning.

I finally threw some speed work into the run this morning. I’m not going to lie, it was not easy to get motivated, but once I was in it, it really wasn’t that bad (in hindsight actually, while I was running I definitely wasn’t loving it).

I used to post treadmill workouts on here all the time. Here’s a “throw back Thursday” 30 minute treadmill workout for any fitness level.

Here’s how the workout went down.

In full disclosure I must admit I hopped off the belt and got water a few too many times. It’s just so easy to jump on the side for a few seconds. I really need to work on that.


I hadn’t planned on doing those two Yasso 800s at the end, but I felt a little pressure when I found my Flat Bart by the TV remote.

I always wear my lighter racing shoes (Mizuno Wave Sayonara) for faster workouts. It’s easier to pull off speed work in a lighter shoe.


While I was on a roll today I decided to throw in some foam rolling after also. I can’t remember the last time I did that. It’s been weeks.

I got joined with my little man afterwards for a few laughs. The first one was because of this view.

The second one was when he found my Flat Bart and asked, “Why does this guy have such a big head?”

Then he asked it there was a real guy and if the real guy had a big head too. I couldn’t stop laughing. I told him it was my coach Bart and Joaquin really wants to meet him in person now. I have to make that happen somehow.


Okay, so some random Thursday tips coming at you. Ready or not, here they are.


If you want to work out first thing in the morning set out your shoes and shorts and anything else you need the night before. Make it easy to just roll out of bed and do your thing right away. I even sleep in my Handful most night so there’s one less thing to do when I wake up.

Admittedly, my plan did not work as well as usual this morning as I took my time getting starting the run because I was not looking forward to doing speed work. But, I made it and I had to do a little self talking about what goals I really have for myself in the next few months.

That being said, if you don’t have any big time goals or races or anything you’re working towards and you just want to get moving, well, do it. You’ll feel so much better when you’re done and really all you have to do is move a little.

And sweat a little.

This morning’s workout was one heck of a sweaty one.

Which leads me to the second tip of the day.

Make lazy mama lasagna using these raviolis from Costco. They are delicious.



Make eating vegetables and fruits fun for the family.

Last night I enlisted a helper and made zoodles (zucchini noodles) to go with our lasagna.


Yes, we’re loving our vegetable spiralizer. Last night we even had a little “umbrella” left over after our spiralizing madness.


Before we had the spiralizer I made noodles with zucchini just by cutting them really small just like in the original recipe for roasted zucchini noodles. Yes, we roast everything around here. Really, any vegetable can be roasted with parchment paper and Italian spices. Less time, less mess.


I generally roast everything dry, but sometimes add olive oil. My go to spices are Italian spices, garlic salt, crushed red pepper and nutritional yeast. I roast everything at 425 and never set the timer. I really should though. I left these in the oven a little too long last night.


Nothing a little marinara couldn’t fix though.


I added a few other things to my plate also.



This morning we make it a point to be a part of the Frieda’s Fear No Fruit Challenge.

I tried to get creative and make fruit monsters.


I was pretty impressed with myself, but I’m not quite sure these guys were that impressed with my work.



We’re definitely all fans of the dragon fruit though. Mmm hmm….

And my final random tip, you can add spinach to pretty much anything. Smoothies, egg white scrambles, gluten free green banana bread, sandwiches, etc.


It’s just marvelous.


Okay, whelp, since our little Lego making time yesterday took a turn for the worse and the Legos are not allowed to be out today (someone lost his privileges), we’re playing “school” and going for some reading and artwork.

    Do you eat anything before you run in the mornings? My goal is to start running when I wake up but never know if I should eat and what I should eat, how long should I wait after I eat. Any tips. Im always in a hurry to, so that doesn’t help.

    I have the same spiralizer and love it 🙂 I usually sautée whatever noodles I make…is there a reason you normally dry roast veggies? I’ve never tried it but would think some olive oil would make them tastier? Cannot believe you can do that much on the treadmill, I can barely tolerate 4 miles on it 🙂

    The spiralizer looks like a lot of fun!

    I’m all about night before setup, coffee, clothes, etc. It really helps me in the morning!

    I’m like you – I lay out my stuff every single night so that when the alarm goes off at 5:00 I just through it on, brush my teeth, pee and I’m ready to go!!!

    I love the idea of fear no fruit. It is a fun way to get children to like and eat fruits. I am already looking forward to making dinosaurs and dragons out of mangos.
