Scenes From Fitness Palooza and the Bro Knows Dinner

 

Good morning!

I feel like I’ve been waiting for this Sunday for a REALLY long time. So far it’s turned out just how I imagined. We’re still in our pajamas, we’ve had lots of cuddle time, made a huge chocolate salad “milkshake” and I’m already on my third cup of coffee.

Let’s see. Friday night I randomly found myself with the boys here for a school fundraiser.

There was no where else I’d rather be on a Friday night. Ha. At least I got some quality time showing the boys how good I am at this game.

It was date night later after the boys were in bed. A little double date with Phil and the hubs and this cheap wine that was delicious.

Yesterday I got to go to my first Fitwall class. It was weird being on the other side of things instead of teaching a class, but I LOVED it.

It totally exceeded my expectations and it’s the perfect cross training workout for runners. I’ll review the whole experience in a different post since I’m going back to take a different class. I want to be able to give you the whole scoop.

I’m super excited about the whole Fitwall thing.

It was so fun and such a great workout. The brilliant trainers and the man Clifton, who’s behind it all, are pretty amazing too.

After that I headed straight to Fitness Palooza. The YMCA is one of the few organizations that offer a free training for all their trainers and instructors to get CEC credits. I hadn’t been to a conference for awhile so it was so much fun taking other classes and learning new things.

I thought I’d do a quick little recap of what six hours at a fitness conference looks like.

Obviously there was some baked purple sweet potato snacking done in route from Fitwall to the YMCA.

We got some freebies from ACE and a free lunch from California Pizza Kitchen when we checked in.

Instructors are always carrying around a ton of stuff and are ready to take notes during the different sessions. My set up looked a little like this.

Um, heck yes friends, we still teach step aerobics. I’m actually anxiously awaiting a comeback. I teach once a week on Monday nights and was desperate for some new combos, etc.

Here’s what I walked away with. I can’t dance worth beans, but I throw together a couple step combos. Ha ha.

I’m going to teach a variation of this Monday night. We’ll see how it goes.

Ten minutes between sessions is just enough time to grab some free coffee

and stuff your face with the CPK sandwich (I got turkey and brie and it was delicious) while sitting in the hallway.

The genius that I am forgot spin shoes. They really make a big difference. I’m not a fan of spinning in regular shoes, but it works.

I am a fan of bikes that show you the RPMs and distance though. The bikes I usually teach on don’t.

I also am a fan of keeping a pen in my hair the entire conference and for every class. Surprisingly it stayed in all day yesterday.

I am also a huge fan of instructors that get off the bike and play the harmonica.

Right? This guy, Joe Lewis, is awesome! He got off his bike and played the harmonica during the song “Stay With Me”.

I can’t do that, but I might have to get more creative in my spin classes.

By the way, I think it’s harder to take a spin class than it is to teach one. When you’re teaching you have a ton of things to be cueing and to think about and count, etc. When you’re taking a class you don’t have all that to distract you and you just have to push yourself. It’s tough.

 

Eating all day any chance to get at conferences like this is a must. I had a ton of snacks packed. Some of the other snacks that went down were Seedy Silk STUFT Bread

Random, but if you have not had a Jazz apple you really need to try one. They are my favorite!

 

I took a Power Barre class.

The class was awesome, but it reminded me how stiff I am and that I am not graceful at all. I just pretended.

The last session was ropes. Holy smokes, ropes are no joke.

Twenty seconds doing dynamic rope moves are intense. I really need to get some of these for my boot camp. I think they’ll be a big hit.

Random tip- the longer the rope, the harder it is to do the move. I learned that yesterday and will now always be on the lookout for the shortest ropes.

Thankfully my brother had invited us over to Mom and Dad’s for dinner last night so I didn’t have to cook.

I was in charge of salad so naturally I stopped at Smart and Final quickly on the way there and bought the Costco Kale Salad. (Yes, they sell it at Smart and Final too.)

Another random tip-  Put the air conditioning on full blast for the feet only to keep things cold on the drive.

I was freezing, but the salad bags stayed cold. Ha ha.

My brother went all out with homemade mac and cheese and some yummy BBQ goodness.

Dessert is always my favorite at family dinners. Last night was caramel apple pie with vanilla ice cream.

We’re staying in our pajamas until it’s time for another Charger Party. Weird, but they didn’t put me in charge of bringing anything. Ha.

    Thanks for the tip about the YMCA offering free CEC classes for instructors. I’m currently in process of becoming a spin instructor so this is good to know. I’ll have to make sure to audition for a class there!

    I can’t even remember the last time I took a fitness class! I used to do some step classes. They are fun, but there are always those people who have the whole routine memorized and make the rest of us uncoordinated people feel even more awkward! 😉

    So far this weekend I went for a 13.1 mile long run, went to a football game and did some house hunting. It’s my boyfriend’s birthday today so we are going out for dinner later on.

    Jazz apples are awesome! They grow those up here in Washington. I like opal apples as well- I always get super excited about the fall apple harvest. Pumpkin is pretty great, but apples are the ultimate autumn produce, in my opinion.

    I see a group of strong looking ladies doing boot camp on the field at 5 am whenever I hit the local track for a speed workout. Maybe someday I’ll be that tough, but right now the only classes I got to are yoga. I love a nice gentle yoga class after a long run.

    SO MUCH FUN!!! My gym has a step class but the instructor isn’t quite as enthusiastic as you are so I pass on that class. I do LOVE a barre class!!!!! But my gym does not have that so I have to get that elsewhere. Fitwall and ropes sounds amazing….great opportunity you had!!!

    Jazz apples are good, but my fave is the macoun. Not sure if you get them out San Diego way – but you should try and find them when you get to NYC. I am jealous of the purple sweet potatoes.

    Just participated in a cycle class this morning….I have been doing cycle a lot more lately since its less damage on my joints and I have noticed my knees feel better/stronger. I also love body pump at my Y!!! Two Thumbs UP for the Y!!!!!

    I love that my Y also gives free CPR, First Aid and Oxygen training to all its employees.
