Hydration Tips and Poland Spring Cheers

We made it to the pumpkin patch yesterday.

I’ll have to fill you in later though because we’ve got some important things to discuss at the moment.

In one week I’ll by in New York for the TCS New York Marathon. It actually seems a bit surreal. I’m blocking it out like I usually do with huge life events. I don’t want to get too nervous, so not thinking about it works best for me. Ha.

Really though, it’s a huge dream come true. I feel like I don’t deserve it. I mean really, who am I to be able to go to New York and run one of the country’s biggest marathons? I kind of wish I would have been more focused on training, but at this point there really isn’t anything I can do and what can I say, life stuff happens.

I am so darn excited to live out this dream.

Want to know something that would make my dream even better? Getting to go to Live With Kelly and Michael the day after the marathon.

I just want to hang out and pretend we’re best friends for like 10 seconds. Is that too much to ask?

Kidding.

I didn’t know Deena Kastor was running the marathon this year until I read this article the other day. Oh man, ever since getting to hang out with her I admire her so much more for everything she does. The lady is an amazing athlete and mom and she is still breaking records. She’s definitely one of my major inspirations and her dedication and determination fuel my desire to keep on it even though I’m not the youngest one of the bunch.

Poland Spring has been the Official Bottled Water of the 2014 NYC Marathon for the past twenty years. This year, they are celebrating with a “Thanks a Million” campaign to thank the millions of New Yorkers for their loyalty to the brand.

There’s an increased awareness of the importance of drinking water and how proper hydration is key to running, health and both athletic and everyday performance.

Keeping the body hydrated is important just for your heart health. It helps the heart more easily pump blood through the blood vessels to the muscles and it also helps the muscles remove waste so that they can work efficiently.

I know when I’m not properly hydrated that I feel awful, but I sometimes forget how important hydration is for pretty much everything.

My go to source for hydration is always water. I rarely drink sports drinks and even out on marathon courses I stick to water and gels. That’s what my body is used to, so that’s what I stick with.

I’m not a doctor, but I do have some hydration trips to pass along that I’ve learned a long the way with running and other life lessons. The amount of water you need depends on a lot of different things (climate, temperature, activity level, etc.), but figuring out what works for you and your body is important.

Here are my top three daily hydration tips.

1. Water is best. Physicians recommend that regular people should drink five to six 8 oz. glasses of water every day.

2. If.you feel thirsty, you’re already slightly dehydrated. Always pre-hydrate before physical activity.

3. Pay attention to your urine color. It should be a light yellow color, similar to pale lemonade.

Here are my top three hydration tips during the marathon.

1. Start your hydration the day before. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

2. Stop at every aide station, even the first couple. You may not feel like you need water yet, but it’s best to play on the safe side.

3. It’s okay to walk and take your time to drink on the course. I have yet to master the whole side mouth sip thing, so I’ve learned to stop and walk through aid stations to make sure I get enough water.

I’ve learned that you need to be very careful after the race is over also. Sometimes with all the excitement of finishing a marathon I forget to rehydrate as much as I should immediately afterwards. Make sure to rehydrate afterwards.

Poland Spring will have a video booth at the TCS New York City Marathon Health and Fitness Expo to give runners the opportunity to create a special “Poland Spring Cheers” video to toast family and friends who supported their marathon journey. The TCS New York City Marathon Health and Fitness Expo is being held Thursday, October 30 through Saturday, November 1.

If you’re not going to the expo, you can still create your own video and share it on social media using #PolandSpringCheers.

I’m planning on stopping by the booth and making another video, but here is my first one. I actually should make a really, really long one so I can properly thank everyone, but that might be impossible and then I’d start crying and stuff. Ha.

“Thanks a Million”

(I’m not sure what’s up with that screen shot, but oh well. At least it looks like I’m cheering. Ha.)

I’m so jealous/excited that you are running NY! I’m hoping to get into the NYC half next year and mayyyyyyybe the full.

How long are you going to be in the city? Are your guys coming with you? It’s going to be packed because of the marathon, but it’s a lot of fun to wander around 🙂

Good luck at NYCM, Kristin!!! I have to tell you I got my PRO Compression tights this afternoon and promptly tested them out with a 2 mile run – LOVE them!! First time I’ve ever run in tights alone (without shorts over top). They are awesome, thanks for the great deal 🙂
