Lowest Mileage Week Ever, Marathon Winner, KettleWorX and Better Sleep


Well hello.

Happy Monday! I’m actually writing this rather late on a Sunday night, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.


Let’s see. Just realized a ran a total of 11 miles this week. Woot! I’m actually pretty proud. The whole rest and recovery was intentional, so the whole life getting busy and hectic and needing more attention thing kind of worked out well. I may throw a couple more miles in this week, but I don’t have a set number or a plan or anything. What the? What is happening?


I’m not sure yet when my next full marathon will be. I’m about 99% sure I’m dropping down the the half this weekend at Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon. More thoughts on that later.


I DO know that I’ll be running the BMO Harris Bank Phoenix Marathon on February 28th, 2015.

I really want you all to come run it too or just come run the half or the 10K. Yes?

I mean, check out the good times we’re going to have.

Today has been one heck of a whirlwind day. I had an all day fitness training to become a KettleWorX instructor.

I ate a random egg white breakfast STUFTwich on the road on the way there.

Some people were commenting on the size of my coffee mug and asked if it was really filled all the way with coffee.

Why yes, yes it was and it lasted all day long.

The knucklehead that not only learned and practiced the wrong track that I had to present today, but also left my clipboard with the entire manual and important paperwork at home on the kitchen table.

I really shouldn’t have been surprised.

So, when I really should have practiced my track for a couple days, I looked over the video a couple times while stuffing my face during the lunch break. Lovely.

Among the bazillion food items I packed for the training was one mf these magnificent Vega Sport protein bars. Dang I love them.

Somehow everything went well and I passed and am officially a KettleWorX certified instructor. Woot! I have lots of fun kettlebell facts to share and such, but those will have to wait. I’m pooped.

So it’s been a long day and a late night which means tomorrow morning might be a bit rough. No problem, right?

Ha ha.

Oh random, but my late night snacks were a bunch of brown rice cake creations and herbal tea while I worked tonight.

I’m really into this goat cheese and spicy jam thing lately. I added a pricy pear and a little NuttZo to the crazy creation too.


Okay, so yep, off to bed. I have been having a heck of a time sleeping well lately, so thought I’d share this cool thing on the secrets to better sleep from Greatist. Maybe I should try some of these tips.

    No…tips here for better sleep other than I know MY body MUST get good rest or it can not function. Seriously, I drag, I get dizzy, I just feel off….so, a shot of NyQuil can be a good friend sometimes. 😉

    My church is on a 6-week study of being a “good neighbor”….hmming Mr. Rogers “Won’t you be my neighbor” right now….so this week I am going to try to go out of my way and be more neighborly to others whether in my neighborhood or at Target….help out when I can depending on the circumstance. (We are in a winter storm warning right now so don’t know how much I will be out and about today….) MN is simply lovely.

    OMG, Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas, sooo fun!!! I wish I had a secret to better sleep, it would make life so much better in all ways. Probably my biggest factor is not entirely my body’s ability to sleep, but the little ones I may have to attend to any any hour… It’s GOT to get better, right??? Have a great week!

    I don’t usually have trouble getting to sleep (unless I have a lot of things going on and then I can’t shut off my brain), but I am really bad about staying up too late and not getting enough sleep. I actually have an alarm on my phone to remind me to start getting ready for bed. It helps save me from myself when I’m getting sucked into the internet (let me just click on 12 more links!)

    I am the WORST about sleep hygiene. I’ve started not even bringing my iPhoner into my bedroom with me because I end up losing an hour diddling around on Instagram. I am totally unwilling to give up spicy food, wine, or chocolate, so maybe I’ll work on some of the other suggestions!

    My goal this week is to figure out if a protein named UvrA is making mutations in my bacteria. I’m also hoping to score a new pair of shoes.

    I can’t wait to hear about the kettlebell training! Kettlebell Turkish get ups are magically deliciously difficult.

      I’m with you on being unwilling to give up spicy food and chocolate. I mean, seriously. I bet that darn snake of yours doesn’t help the sleep situation. I wouldn’t be able to get any shut eye with that guy around. LOL.

    Sleep has always been a battle for me, partially because of anxiety and being a light sleeper but also since having kids, it’s more because there are many times they keep me up! I know that I probably need to be going to bed around 9pm to get enough but it never happens. I usually get 7 hours and that feels pretty sufficient, and when I dip lower I start to feel like a mess!

    My goal this week is to NOT go crazy tapering for my marathon 🙂

    Just found your blog and I’m so excited. I love reading about other fitness/running moms! Keep up the great work. My sleep tip is to not have a baby 🙂 haha but seriously, I have an 18-month-old who is FINALLY sleeping through the night consistently for 12 hours and I still only get 5-6 hours, because I actually do the the things I need to (like cleaning, meal prep, catch up on work, email, etc.) when he’s sleeping. I’m definitely going to try these tips out and stop trying to cram so much stuff in when I should be sleeping!

    Kristin, sometimes backing off is a good thing.. you have been on a nonstop run for too long & have other issues to think about – you deserve a break! 🙂

    On sleep – if I won the lotto & did not have to worry about money & how to be able to retire before I am dead, that would help me sleep! 🙂
