Flashback Friday- Eating Our Way Through New York City


I’m a little late on this flashback Friday edition, but my little project of organizing the pantry this morning turned into an all day event. Not to mention  I really should be packing for the weekend festivities.

Oh, which reminds me. If you’re going to be in town for Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon, we’re having a fun little meet-up, tweet-up, whatever you want to call it at the race expo tomorrow at 3:30 pm at the Pro Compression booth.

Oh and just in case you’ve been missing some random food pictures, here was my breakfast from today.

It might not look that exciting, but it was delicious. Egg white scramble with chicken apple sausage and spinach with Scotty B’s bacon jalapino hot sauce with the easiest no grain microwave muffin topped with goat cheese and spicy jam and an apple with cinnamon.

Mmm hmm….


So, Andrew and I always say that no matter where we go, we know how to eat well. I guess it’s kind of our thing. WE didn’t really have a plan for New York, but did have a couple of types of food in mind.

Well, we really ate our way all over the city so I thought I’d show you our favorites.

The first place was just one we happen to walk by in the rain. Andrew spotted The Red Flame Diner and were overly ready for hot coffee and to warm up a bit. I did a quick little Yelp search it had good reviews so we went for it.

It was a busy little place that meant business. You ordered quick and they served you quick. I kind of felt like I was on an episode of Seinfeld. Ha.

The coffee was good.

Andrew got a normal sausage and egg breakfast.

I was a little more high maintenance with mine. I had to be careful though because I could tell they just weren’t in the mood. Ha. It was delicious though. I got a veggie omelet with whole grain toast.

I brought my own hot sauce, but it only lasted for this meal. I wasn’t prepared for all the restaurants only have Tabasco as the hot sauce option. Ha. I guess we’re spoiled here in California.


I did some eating of some food I brought from home in the hotel room during our stay there too. Among other things that were consumed were a roasted purple sweet potato,

Eats on the street included a couple of hot dogs, a huge pretzel and countless overpriced Starbucks beverages.

The night before the marathon I was in search of pizza. A guy at the hotel recommended John’s Pizzeria that was within walking distance. We decided to give it a go.

It was a busy place. The atmosphere was awesome, but it took us awhile to get service and to get our food.

But… the wait was so worth it.

The pizza was amazing. I got a whole wheat crust pizza with marinara, basil and grilled chicken. Andrew got pepperoni and mushroom. We both were members of the clean plate club and finished off our pizzas.

That’s just how we do things.


After the race we really wanted to celebrate, but we didn’t want to go anywhere far away. We’d had our share of being outside in the cold and the wind for the day.

It was one heck of a fun date night in New York City.

We started at the Penninsula for a drink at Salon de Ning Rooftop Bar.

I got the Hot as a Cucumber martini.

It was delicious and expensive. I thought I might get discount if I showed my marathon medal, but no such luck. WE took our sweet time sipping those $24 martinis.

We were all about finding a hole in the wall pub while we were there. We did just that as we walked past Judge Roy Bean Public House.

I have the tendency to start chatting pretty much everywhere we go. I just can’t help myself, but we made some pretty fun friends at our time at Judge Roy Bean. It was such a fun hang out place.

There were even these guys from California who just happen to be hanging out there post race also.

We did the whole marathon talking, goal time, PR, favorite race ever, etc. talking for awhile.

This place is known for it’s pumpkin beer. They put a sugar spice rim or something on it that is just amazing.

We really wanted some good Chinese food and found just that at Joe’s Shanghai Restaurant. I won’t explain everything we got, but they are famous for their steamed dumplings and man were they good.

The last huge highlight we went to right before we left town was Katz’s Delicatessen.

Our brother-in-law told us to check it out and man was it the happening place. IT was loud and you order at the counter and then try to find a seat.

It actually made me a little nervous because everyone was yelling and such, but we finally found a place to sit and our sandwiches were to die for. I got a turkey sandwich with lettuce and tomato added.

Oh man, good stuff.


And that, my friends ,is a whole lot of pricy food talk around the city. Gosh, so sorry. Just had to share since every single place was freaking awesome.

Yes, yes it was.

I still can’t believe that the TCS New York City Marathon was just two weeks ago. Life has been nonstop nutty since we’ve been back. Holy smokes.


Okay, so time to finish off my pantry project. I should be back shortly tomorrow before I leave for Vegas with some non-food talk.

Do you always want a particular food or do you change it up? Andrew and I pretty much have to have pizza at least once every time we travel. We just can’t help it.

    Isn’t Katz’s intense? It is so loud/crazy in there!

    I think my favorite vacation restaurant would be the Ship Tavern in London. Really amazing pub food and super nice people work there.

    I pretty much always want tacos, burgers, or Chinese food. They’re my favorites.

    1. You had a martini in NYC – that makes me happy and I had a martini here in KS knowing that you would get the full experience.
    2. Judge Roy Beans – when we lived in TX we ate at the Judge Roy Beans in Keller, TX.
    3. You are headed to Las Vegas next and that is one of my favorite places of all times!!! (after Hawaii!!)

    This post just made me really, really hungry! It looks like you guys had a lot of fun, too! I’m all about dessert, so that’s what I have to have anytime I travel. Or you know, just anytime in general.

    I am upset you missed out on the bakeries and bagels but I get it – there is just so much to eat in the city and so hard to know where to go, especially when it is raining. Next time you come, you must get some black and white cookies and cupcakes!

    I second getting a black and white cookie, and a really good bagel next time you’re back. Being from the area I forget that some of these foods are NY specific! Thanks for another great discount code. I’ve been loving the leggings and socks!

    So I just found my first Stokes purple sweet potato but I’ve never prepared a sweet potato (yep, truly!) so I need advice. I have a toaster oven so do I just stick the whole thing in or do I slice it or prick it first? How long and at what temp? I’m so excited to try it and want it to be semi-perfect (:

    Awesome eats and pretty much what I would go for too though a bagel would have topped off the NYC experience….next time, right?

    I love to try new things when I travel 🙂
    For my favorite restaurant from my travels, it was definitely Marukame Udon in Hawai’i. OMG, that place was so good because of the fresh-made noodles and amazing soft boiled eggs. They even have a deep-fried soft-boiled egg!
