The Fitbit Blogger Challenge- East vs. West

Hello!

Gosh, I feel like I’ve been away from the computer forever, but don’t even have anything that exciting to report. I haven’t even been taking any food pictures. I mean, right? What is up with me?

Let’s see though. I did teach a spin class yesterday morning and decided it was time to brighten things up a bit.

Everything is better in brighter socks.

So far today I got on the treadmill early things morning for a quick 6 miles. I’m not going to lie, my main motivation was getting to watch a couple The Mindy Project episodes.

I haven’t done any double digit runs this week and I’m loving it. Next week I plan to step it up a bit, so for now I’m taking full advantage of shorter runs.

And, well, just because I haven’t posted a sweetener free roasted kabocha squash picture for a very long time and because I’m just about to finish off my last one, here you go.

Oh, and because Mom always has the best seasonal decorations by her front door, here you go.

One of these days I’ll step it up and be more like her. Ha.

Okay, so let’s talk about this cool Shape and Men’s Fitness Fitbit Blogger Challenge that’s going on.

There are 10 East Coast and 10 West Coast bloggers and we’re competing to see which coast is the most “Active Coast”.

As part of this challenge, we were given the new Fitbit Charge to keep track of our activity.

The pressure is on to keep moving throughout the day with this little gem. Set up was a breeze and it automatically syncs with your computer or your phone wirelessly. I also really like that it’s a watch and small enough that it doesn’t’ feel bulky or anything. You can check out all the cool things it can do (and it can do A LOT) here.

Speaking of, I had a pretty restless night’s sleep last night and it told me all about it this morning.

Yes, I may have been in bed by 9:00 pm, but man did I struggle with poor sleep for a bit. That keeps happening lately.

Here’s just a quick view of other things you can see on your dashboard on your phone or the computer.

This is where I’m at so far today.

It’s automatically set to have a daily goal of 10,000 steps. I kind of wish my treadmill steps counted, but that’s okay. It really give me more reason to get the family involved and be more active all together.

As part of this contest, we’re given a weekly challenge to help us to maximize our Total Steps and Total Distance. Here is this week’s challenge as part of Shape and Men’s Fitness #MotivationalMondays

Blogger Challenge #1: Take your workout outdoors this week and go on a hike or trail run. Soak in the views as you inch closer to the 10K/day goal!

I got a little bit of a late start to the challenge, but we’re on it as a family. Heck yes, we all went out for get the last few steps we needed last night.

It’s not always a race guys.

2014-11-19 16.55.22

Ha ha.

While we were out there we did say more than once that we should be doing this more often. We need more of this.

We got our 10,000 steps and the Fitbit vibrates to let you know you’ve reached your goal. I must say, it was pretty exciting.

2014-11-19 17.03.43

Not sure what our adventure will be this afternoon, but tomorrow we’re taking the challenge to a little Holiday Snow Day fun at LEGOLAND California. Oh heck yes. We can’t wait! We’ll have to make sure to get a few extra steps.

2014-11-20 08.07.38-1

I’ll be doing updates on the challenges each week. So far the West Coast has been trailing the East Coast by just a few steps. Not for long though. Ha.

Check out the score board here AND enter to win YOUR OWN Fitbit Charge. They’re giving one away each week! Woot!

Have a great night!

Do you track your daily steps?

Fitbit charge, fitbit flex, fitbit force – what are the advantages/disadvantages? My wife wants one for Xmas, but I haven’t looked into them yet. Any recommendations?

Flex is their entry-level model and doesn’t have a screen on it so you have to view your stats on your phone or computer. I’ve had the Flex for almost a year and really like it (except for the lack of a screen) because it syncs with the other apps I use like Endomondo and MyFitnessPal. The downside is that because it doesn’t have a screen I have to wear a watch or carry my phone when I run. The Charge will be a step up from the Flex but it includes a small screen.

However, now that I’m training for a 1/2 marathon and increasing my runs, I’m looking for something a bit more advanced. I’m holding out for the Surge which is being released early next year. It has a heart rate monitor, clock, and a screen so I can watch my stats.

I had a different monitor before and found Fitbit to be much easier to use and so comfortable to wear. It has definitely kept me motivated to hit my goals each day and I love seeing my weekly stats improving.

My only piece of advice is to not wear it in the shower even though they say you can. I know people who do and they have not had any problems but I’m a little paranoid about moisture and germs. I remove it when I shower and give it a quick wipe with a cotton ball and alcohol before putting it back on to help keep it clean. Whatever you choose I think your wife will be pleased.
