2016 and Being Under Construction

2016 and Being Under Construction

Happy New Year! Holy cow this vacation has flown by, but I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a fabulous new year.

We dressed it up for Christmas Eve,

but then I pulled out my Tipsy Elves sweater for Christmas Day. Isn’t it the best?

We were pretty classy at LEGOLAND for the Kids’ New Years celebration too (it was at 6:00 pm which was perfect in my book).

Oh and these sock monkey socks that I’ve been rocking are the best too. Thanks to my awesome nieces that gave them to me.

I usually don’t do year recaps and such, but as I sat in bed on New Year’s Eve I felt like doing a little one through instagram.

Before looking back and looking ahead though, I just need to highlight a few last things from the past couple of weeks.

Right after Christmas (the day after Christmas actually), we had the boys’ birthday party. It was a little crazy having it the day after, but I figured we’d just go with it. We even had a special appearance from Batman (he’s the boys’ uncle).

We also ordered ginormous New York Giant Pizzas.

They were a hit.

So was the Costco cake. They pulled through on the skateboard design and seriously, you just can’t beat Costco cakes. They are so good and so cheap.

I have so much other random stuff I want to write about, but with school starting back tomorrow and the piles of laundry sitting in each of our bedrooms, I’ll spare you all.

I’ve been subbing a lot of classes at the gym which has helped keep me moving since I really wasn’t too motivated over the holidays. It’s no joke that stress zaps your energy. Thank goodness for cross training and all the benefits. I let myself rest a bit with the running and instead of following my training plan, I just took it easy. I actually think I’m going with that outlook into the new year for a bit. I’m much more level headed that way.

I was supposed to do a 20 mile run on Christmas Eve, but that didn’t happen. I barely made it through 13 before I threw in the towel.

I’ve picked it up a little this week (the mileage, not the pace) and got in a 17 miler and yesterday was my first official long run on the year so I felt it was only appropriate to do 20.16 miles.

That was the first 20 miler I’ve done since the Long Beach Marathon back in October. It felt good to get one under my belt, but it also gave me a lot of thinking time about what my goals are for this year.

Here’s where I’m at:

I wrote it all out here on instagram, but pretty much last year was one heck of a roller coaster ride and for the most part I was going downhill and trying to recover.

Just starting back to full time work and then getting injured at the beginning of the year (second time dealing with hip dysplasia) pretty much did me in. From there I struggled to balance everything out, gained about 12 pounds, didn’t take good care of myself, but still managed to get to Boston. I wasn’t ready mentally or physically, but I even got to the Boston 2 Big Sur Challenge. Man was it a struggle though. I smiled and cried my way through it and knew if I was going to get back next year I better take good care of myself.

I might be sharing too much here, but I know we all have our struggles. I finally felt like I was back in a good place the later end of the year. I finally had a couple of stronger races and I know I still want to see what I can do.

This year is the year of being under construction. I have a full race schedule, but my priorities aren’t necessarily on getting faster, they are to just take care of myself and get to a balanced place. I’m not sure if we ever find that, but I’ve slowly been making progress and this year is the year to just step back, take some extra time and rest, do more devotionals, spend more time with family, run without putting pressure of myself and finally finish a bunch of personal goals and projects that I say I’m going to finish every year and never do.

Smile

Yep, I’m under construction this year to be the best version of me I can be. That’s one that dreams big, tries my best to inspire others, is a better mom, wife, daughter and friend, and just lives every single day to the fullest. It’s time to create myself.

I found this at Target the other night when I went there for milk and cat food. I couldn’t pass it up though and it now is hanging in our kitchen.

I have lots of notebooks and lists to start off the year and actually have a week’s worth of dinner menus planned out.

And the other day I made the same wish I’ve made a bazillion and one times.

THIS is the year it’s going to come true.

Cheers to the new year friends. Cheers to new goals, dreaming big and most of all believing in yourself and telling yourself you deserve to make your dreams come true.

2016-01-02 07.35.08

I’ll leave you with our new favorite bedtime read. It’s awesome and so is the first book.

2016-01-02 19.51.25

Oh and one of my favorite presents from Joaquin for Christmas is this stress ball.

2016-01-03 17.38.22

He picked it out himself and was so proud. It’s been by my side the past couple of days. Ha ha.

I may not be here on the bloggy blog a lot this year, but I’ll be posting about races (I have 4 marathons on the schedule and Boston and Big Sur are two of them) and fitness and random things that I can’t help to share on instagram. It’s such a fun place.

Smile

Oh and lastly, if you haven’t discovered the app Bitmoji yet on your phone, you HAVE to. It is THE BEST!

Have a fabulous 2016. May all your goals and dreams come true!

I love “The day the crayons went on strike!” It’s a great book to use to teach about gender stereotypes and gender identity.

Your website is a great read. Yup – only one goal for 2016 – life balance. That’s probably the hardest thing to achieve. By the way, what are you wishing for?
