Well That Month Sure Flew By and a Surgery Date

My goal to blog weekly didn’t go over too well this month. Oopsies.

Oh well, here I am though and the best way to play catch up might just be to do it by running through the camera roll, yes?

Here comes a little injury chat first though.

There have many so many ups and downs with this injury I can’t even explain. I actually feel better now and am finally not in pain every day and can climb stairs without having to hold on to the railing for dear life and it doesn’t hurt to walk up and down hills, but there is absolutely no running now or in the near future. I’ve stopped counting the weeks that I haven’t run because I’m just trying to block the whole thing out at the moment. Ha ha.

Anyhoo…..

A couple of weeks ago I went to another follow up appointment after more tests and a CAT scan to see what was going on with the inconclusive MRI results. The MRI showed that I have a torn labrum and either a bone tumor or a stress fracture. I should have realized something was up when I was getting up from the CAT scan table and the lady asked me if I was in pain all the time. I told her that I wasn’t anymore, but I was for a good 6 weeks.

So, long story short…….. I had a follow up appointment with the orthopedic surgeon. We decided to go ahead and do the surgery to repair the labral tear and then the stress fracture and labral tear could heal at the same time. Surgery was scheduled for 10/17 and I was transferred to his partner who specializes in labral repair.  When I had my pre-op appointment with him he told me he wasn’t sure he could do the surgery with the stress fracture and there were a lot of things that could go wrong. He was going to consult the best of the best to see what they would do in this situation.

The next day I got the call that the surgery was off. Not one of the doctors he talked to said they would go  do the surgery given the stress fracture so we postponed it for 6 weeks. He also has referred me to an endocrinologist because the stress fracture is in a weird spot that usually doesn’t happen to younger people. I have an appointment with an endocrinologist in a few weeks to address bone health and such.

So many appointments and money and just waiting to find out the next steps. I’m really not a fan of any of it and it’s darn hard to schedule all this when you’re a school teacher and can only do things certain days in the afternoons.

So, that’s that. The new surgery date is 11/21, but I have an appointment the week before to make sure the stress fracture has healed and we’re good to go. Oh man.

This calming oil blend has come in handy many times though.

Seriously, it’s in my purse at all times and it went to each and every doctor appointment with me. (The special blend is Serenity and Balance just in case you need one.)

So in the meantime while I can’t run, I finally buckled down and got a new elliptical from Fitness Direct.

2016-10-12 05.16.41

I love that I can finally do programs and everything again. I usually stick to the hill or cardio program and try do anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour and then once a week stay on a little longer. This was longest distance I’ve done. Usually it’s between 3.5-4 miles. Woo hoo.

2016-10-15 11.49.19

It’s the little things.

Smile

Speaking of little things, I finished Gilmore Girls so I’ve moved on to Parenthood and I’m only 4 episodes in, but loving every second of it. It’s the perfect elliptical show at 5 am.

2016-10-26 05.32.14-1

My friend is going on maternity leave at the gym so I’ll be subbing some extra classes here and there for her that I’m excited about. It will help as a distraction from not being able to run. The boys and I tried out our new little Sunday morning routine this morning.

2016-10-30 10.43.02

I’m scheduling at least 4 strength workouts a week now too for myself because I really need to make sure I have the strength I need before I can run again. I just fit in quick strength sessions whenever I can. If it’s only 10 minutes, then I do bigger combination moves to get it done. If I have more time or I’m teaching a class, then I can focus a little extra attention on each muscle group.

2016-10-19 19.43.43

The walking lunges are back. Man it had been a long time. And at home to make myself feel cool I stand on the treadmill for some upper body work.

2016-10-29 14.00.19

Smile

Enough about all that, but next week I can post a simple strength workout that anyone can do anywhere to get the job done when they’re pressed for time. Sound good?

Now on to other news from the camera roll.

Seriously I don’t know what the heck is going on, but these guys are growing up way too fast.

2016-09-28 07.33.42

One gives us a little more trouble at school than the other. I have a funny story while I’m at it. Joaquin has already forgotten his lunch 3 times and we’re 9 weeks into school. The most recent time I didn’t know and he had just left it in the car by his seat. He later told me after school that it was so cool and he got to go in the lunch line and just tell the lady his name and that he forgot his lunch and he got a “free” one complete with a chocolate milk, grilled cheese and something else.

I thought that was so nice of the school that they did that. Then when I got home there was a message on the phone that there was a negative balance in Joaquin’s account at school. Hmmm….. interesting.

I put some extra money in both accounts for the boys just in case it might happen again and now Judah wants to buy lunch because Joaquin told him how cool it was. Too funny.

In other news I was on a seriously STUFT Seedy Bread kick for awhile and was baking it every weekend

2016-09-29 06.20.44

along with gluten free banana bread.

2016-10-08 08.53.25

I made a breakfast sandwich with the seedy bread a few times with egg whites, turkey bacon and an avocado.

2016-09-29 07.35.36

It was really good. For some reason though I’m just kind of tired of breakfasts. Its so weird. Let’s hope it’s just a phase. Maybe because I’m usually stuffing my face in the car on the way to work and that’s just not exciting.

Something that is not a phase is all the pumpkin and unsweetened chocolate from Trader Joe’s. You better believed I stocked up..

2016-10-01 18.21.27

And yes, I totally eat that chocolate as is and need to get back to my experimenting days to use up all that pumpkin and make pumpkin protein cookie dough.

Judah lost his fourth tooth at school the other week. His notes to the tooth fairy keep getting better and better.

2016-10-05 20.54.48

I got my hair done around three weeks ago. I posted this picture on instagram and a couple people commented and said they like my haircut.

2016-10-08 13.11.43-1-1

Want to know something? I didn’t even get a haircut, just more highlights. Ha ha. That’s what I get for wearing a ponytail every single day.

We’ve had a ton of parties lately so our weekends have been super busy, but in the best way ever to catch up with family and friends.

2016-10-09 15.28.48

2016-10-22 19.59.57

This was the first of many 40th birthday parties with my college roommates. It’s that time.

Halloween is tomorrow, but we’ve already done it up three different times:

Brick-or-Treat at LEGOLAND as rappers (inspired by Vanilla Ice and his short stint on DWTS)

2016-10-15 15.47.51 HDR

the Halloween carnival as who knows what

2016-10-29 17.23.01 HDR

and at a cousin’s huge party after the carnival complete with a haunted hayride.

2016-10-29 20.38.54

I’m not going to lie, I was a scared.

Smile

I’m back on the cinnamon roasted kabocha squash train.

2016-10-16 09.15.35

I’m also back on the protein ice cream train, but I guess I never actually got off that.

2016-10-21 20.09.40

I also discovered this amazing new coffee from Starbucks.

2016-10-16 07.47.50-1

I made the mistake of stopping at Target on the way home from the gym one night for cat food, laundry detergent and paper towels and this happened.

2016-10-13 19.11.58

The Nutchello was actually outdated and I didn’t catch it until I got home. That chaps my hide. I didn’t even try it.

I discovered these DNX bars. This one is the only one I’ve tried, but it’s darn good and a frequent snack at school.

2016-10-21 12.41.49

Our cat that actually has hair, Nala, has been coming out in the early morning hours to keep me company.

2016-10-13 06.20.10

The Motivate oil keeps me company too during my workouts.

2016-10-18 05.25.53-1

Seriously I love diffusing this one in the workout room. It is the best.

Even though I’m not running I couldn’t pass up the Pro Compression camo socks this month.

2016-10-19 07.26.03-1

Oh and the Mizuno Wave Rider 20 came out just last week! Holy smokes!

2016-10-22 06.24.12

They are totally redesigned and improved. How crazy that the shoe is that amazing that it’s the 20th version?

Love love love.

I did my first little doTERRA open house at the gym last weekend. It was pretty fun. It was kind of weird being the one at the table instead of the person teaching classes, but they were pretty excited about their Deep Blue Rub Samples.

2016-10-22 09.28.05

Smile

Two other doTERRA things I’m obsessed with at the moment are the On Guard Whitening Toothpaste

2016-10-29 08.18.44

and this diffuser blend that makes the kitchen smell like spicy, citrus vanilla fall.

2016-10-30 16.26.29-1

Mmmmm hmmmmm.

Okay, it’s time to leave you now with a discount code and then a super quick deep thought. Nice, huh?

HANDFUL

Okay.

In full disclosure and just putting it out there and being open, I’m kind of lost at the moment without running and not really knowing a time frame or really what the future holds. I have no idea if things will ever be the way they were before or if I’ll ever have my running mojo back. Each day that goes by I kind of lose a little more hope that there are any more marathons in my future and that makes me sad.

I know things could be a lot worse and there are so many other people out there with things that are much bigger deals than this, but I think subconsciously I’m having a harder time with this than I realize or show on the outside.

Just this past week I finally cancelled our trip to New York City and my registration for the TCS New York City Marathon.

2016-10-28 09.21.27

That stung a little bit as we’ve been planning it for almost a year now.

BUT……. as I slowly lose hope of racing again, I gain a better perspective on other things in life that are important. Even if my racing days are over, I can still teach classes and workout and actually do it just to feel good and take care of myself and be the best person I can be, rather than trying to be fast like I used to be or put lots on pressure on myself to find time to train on top of everything else that’s going on. The boys need more of my time daily and it feels good to be able to give it to them right now.

Really, if I can just have the ability to jog a couple miles with my students and my boys and be healthy physically and emotionally (and hopefully continue to inspire others), I’m okay with that. Some days it’s a harder pill to swallow, but if that’s what life has in store, then that’s what life has in store. Let’s just hope I figure things out before I turn 40 because that’s coming up way too soon and right now I’m kind of a mess not knowing what the future holds.

It’s time for some tough self love.

2016-10-09 18.01.21

(I saw this in the bathroom at my friend’s party so naturally I had to get my phone and take a picture.)

We had parent teacher conferences at school for the boys and their teacher talked about how brave Judah was in his writing to just take chances and write and try to sound out the words. He wrote this the other day while we were doing work in the kitchen.

2016-10-25 17.25.06

My brave boy. I can learn a lot from this guy. Taking chances and just going for it. It just melts my heart and shows me I have to be brave too.

And that’s a wrap. So much for a quick little catch up post. Thanks for hanging on and for being here. I hope you had a fantastic October.

2016-10-28 08.03.10-1

Let’s catch up again next week!

This month did go by quickly, and it looks like you had a busy month. I love the note your son wrote about not knowing anyone. We forget how strong kids can be at that age. Everything is new to them. My husband and I were just talking about the tooth fairy last night. His friends Grandson lost his tooth, and he will get $50 for it. I think I was born in the wrong era.

I was just thinking myself ….”Where in the world did October go?”…..

We have two kiddos in cross country in the fall so I believe with all our running to middle school and high school meets the month got away from us. And as soon as sections were over ~ sadly the girls high school did not make it to state although they were close~I told my daughter we have 364 days until next year so lets kick butt.

    (She told me to chill……ha!)

I am always impressed with all you CAN DO with a stress fracture and a tear. Lucky you can still do what you do and teach your classes….

Injuries are tough to deal so it is okay to feel down about it. I hope the surgery happens and goes well. Take your time to heal so you can get back out there. The boys are growing so fast and are so cute! Take care and I will say a little prayer for you.

How did you watch Gilmore Girls and Parenthood? I would love to see those shows. The original or the reunion? I used to be a runner until I broke my hip. I can’t do anything where I might fall now. :( I wasn’t as dedicated as you, though! Good luck with surgery.

Oh, how I have missed your blog, Kristin! I have been reading old posts when your boys were toddlers (I started reading around 2013) and I just find you so endearing. This whole hip thing really sucks, so sorry you have to deal with pain and upcoming surgery. I use running as therapy (‘running from crazy’ lol) so I can totally understand how frustrating this whole thing must be. I don’t know if you want to read about someone else’s experience with the surgery before you have yours, but I did follow along with this runner’s labral tear surgery a few years ago – http://www.runningforbling.com/about-me/labral-tear-and-hip-arthroscopy-101 – and she is back to running pretty speedy marathons :) Your son’s writing is too cute, I miss those days (mine are all teens now which is an entirely new crazy experience ha ha.). Take care, we are all with you and supporting you!

I think mourning the running thing and your uncertain future is pretty OK. If I found out I had to stop hiking, I would be in bad shape, and even I would also try and rationalize with “there is so much worse things.” I get it, and there is, but this is YOUR reality and darn it surgery is a big deal. I wish you the best with your surgery. Something tells me that regardless of your running future, you will figure something out, but that doesn’t mean you don’t fully get to be good and sad about this right now.

PS. I wish I had a helpful lunch lady when I forget my lunch for work. :|

I’m on month 11 of not running. Well, that’s not true…I attempted a comeback this summer and made it about 7 weeks before I had to quit again. I’ve forgiven myself for feeling selfish and angry and hurt by all that has happened. I have to, otherwise it’s going to eat me alive. I missed Boston, I haven’t run a race since last year’s Marine Corps, all I do is swim and lift and bike…it’s just too much, especially when so much of who I am is connected to being a runner. Sure, I’ve gotten good at other things and become a master at being patient, but I still. miss. running. so. much.

All that to say, it’s ok. Yes, there are worse things, but those aren’t happening to you. You’ll get through it, and move on to what’s meant to be. :)

I hope your doctors can get you scheduled in for surgery soon and that the endocrinologist can help you.
Also, your boys are looking very grown up in the pictures.

Wishing you the best of luck with solutions and recovery. I’m getting my other hip replaced on 11/28 (2 and a half years after the first one) and am excited beyond words. Mourn the potential loss of running, but I’ll tell you…pain-free living is truly the bomb. If you aren’t able to run, allow yourself to discover other ways to feed your heart and soul. They are out there waiting for you :)

Injuries are the worst! I’m in the midst of an unknown knee injury that has sidelined my running and I had to cancel my October marathon (my first real one) and it was fairly devastating. I’m doing the elliptical, rowing, and lifting to stay active but I look longingly at the treadmills at the gym (honestly, it’s borderline creepy/pathetic!) And Gilmore Girls is the BEST!!!!!
